I need decorating advice........
Comments (33)OK,I'm one of those "older" folks (I'm 66) and I can tell you that I definitely would not like that sofa! I had one similar to that, hated the pillows. They never stayed put.The section on the end, useless.I always thought I wanted a sectional until I got one.LOL They can't be arranged but one way and most of the time only in one certain area.I don't know how "old" your parents are or their physical condition but bear in mind that when we get older we sometimes have a little trouble getting up and down! That sofa looks "squishy" and looks like it would be hard to get out of if you have that problem.I would much prefer a nice comfy chair or wall away recliner.Since their home is small, maybe a love seat instead of a sofa? Ever noticed that nobody ever sits in the middle of a sofa? So why have a full length sofa? You can do much more with a love seat and a couple of chairs than with a sectional. If I ever buy new furniture it's just going to be comfy chairs!LOL I think you should let your mom pick the color for the walls since she knows you are doing the painting.Be sure to paint the ceiling also.Either the same color of the walls or a lighter hue of the same color. If you want to do a border of another color,do it the ceiling color but you should also put some kind of wood strip to separate the two colors. That might be more work than you anticipated. Instead of getting new lamps, you might consider new shades for the old lamps.I have a couple of lamps that belonged to my parents. My mom saved for months also to buy those lamps and I wouldn't get rid or them for anything.I just bought new shades and they look great! You are very sweet to do this for your parents and I know you wanted to surprise them, but I think it would be better appreciated if you let your mom pick the furniture.Maybe you could take her shopping with the pretense that you are looking for an item of furniture for yourself.Sit in the chairs and on the sofas and you might get an idea what she likes and dislikes that way.I would never want any of my kids to pick what was to go in my house that I have to live with,no more than I would pick for them. Comments (40)Gray IS neutral, as are beige based and off white colors. Why invest in "trends"? Invest in a more timeless color that is not subject to fashions trends. That is sound advice when building a wardrobe or adding elements to your home. Who cares what "NO ONE" wants? The real question is to ask what it is that YOU want? "NO ONE" does not live there....you do. You cannot go wrong with a neutral and non dictating base color. You can always add accent colors. Those should be the trendy colors---the accent colors. They are usually the things that are more easily changed out. This kitchen needs more that just a change of color for the cabinets, though. It is almost a moot point. I agree that painting them is not always a good choice. I had painted some cabinets in my kitchen at one time. Once you opened the cabinet door, you saw that it was really an old cabinet. Unless you are going to go behind the doors and renew that space as well, you might as well not waste your money and time. They almost never look good. I have seen some that do. But, most times it is not a good look. Besides, the finishes on a new cabinet door are finishes that I could never attain from using ordinary paint. And, to get such a resistant and smooth factory finish as what is on my KitchenMaid cabinets would require materials and tools and techniques that are not readily available to me, the DIY person. One advantage for you is that your doors are a slab door and are easier to work with. The two colors that you chose are beautiful. It looks like what ever is on your floor has a gray tone to it....See MoreHelp with knotty pine basement
Comments (17)Gina, fwiw, lots of designers are embracing wood panelled walls these days. It's all part of the current soft modern design trend featuring organic materials. Here's a 2015 Houzz article from Janell Beals about knotty pine walls. Lots of inspo pics. (I recall Janell from decorating boards ages ago. She has fantastic taste and a great eye!!) Also, while painting the walls is a big job and might be too time-consuming or expensive to do now, nothing forces you to paint ALL walls if you decide to paint. (Might already have been suggested upthread). What kind of material are the floor tiles? Wondering if they could be painted. I mean, if you can't stand them. (I like vintage patterned tiles so depending on their colours, I might not be in a hurry to cover them. But that's me. This is YOUR house. :)) Lots of materials can be painted and yes, often, it's a short term solution but there's nothing with that. Again, to my amateur eye, if you want a more open and contemporary feel in the space, changing the ceiling (which will include removing the soffits) and optimizing the lighting will give you the biggest bang for your buck. Could you even gain height with a new ceiling? I seem to recall this happened when Sarah Richardson redid a tiled 70s basement (one of her recent renos on her YT channel). Don't know how long you're planning on living in this house but I bet you'd recoup that reno cost when selling. All this to say, enjoy your space and the process to make it more "you". Don't let its shortcomings overwhelm you. As I tried to express initially, it's easy to get bogged down by our spaces when they fall short of our taste and decor visions but what house is perfect? Plenty of us live with design compromises and shoestring budgets. The important thing is that we LIVE in our (imperfect) spaces. :)...See MoreNeed advice on kitchen with large wall
