ATHROTAXIS and Sugi from Seed
Comments (1)Sugi is fairly easy; never tried Athrotaxis seed. I suspect getting Athrotaxis seed may mean searching for on-line suppliers in Tasmania, if the ones in San Francisco botanical garden don't produce any fertile seed. They are slow-growing at first, around 20-30cm/year once established; mature heights in cultivation (so far) around 10-15m, exceptionally to 20m. Resin...See MoreCryptomeria Radicans & Sekkan Sugi?
Comments (1)C. japonica var. radicans is a botanical designation for trees with a columnar habit. Presumably here in the West a vegetatively propagated clone is being dispersed under that name, in which case a new cultivar name should be coined. If part or all of these are also or instead being raised from imported seeds it should be kept in mind that there could be some variation in resulting seedlings. 'Sekkan' is a tree form with yellow foliage mostly on top, lovely in a sheltered position but sometimes scraggly and discolored in open places. New here yet one in Seattle was already over 17' tall a few years back....See MoreCryptomeria japonica problem
Comments (19)I was not aware it would become so huge!!! It's funny for me to hear people say that about sugi (Cryptomeria japonica). I was first introduced to them when climbing Mt. Gassan, one of the Dewa Sanzan in Yamagata-ken, Japan. Those huge, ancient monsters covered the entire mountain. We climbed it at night in the fog and they gave the place a very spooky, haunted atmosphere. Here they are the next morning: For a sense of scale, that red thing on the left is a hiking backpack, and if you look close, way down the trail, there's a person sweeping the path. Sugi are revered in Japan, and the wood of very old Sugi fetches huge sums. In case anyone is curious, I have more photos of the mountain and the shrine we stayed at on top here -- photos 315 to 331 (including the above picture, but at higher resolution). The temple is run by a group of yamabushi (mountain priests) who attempts to help kami (Shinto nature deities) reach enlightenment (via Buddhist teachings). I love how freely they mix religions over there. :) Anyway, sorry for getting things a bit offtopic. But since people were talking about sugi......See MoreCryptomeria japonica Sekkan-sugi size?
Comments (6)Does seem to have some problems with exposure on some open sites, producing forking shrubby growth and/or burnt foliage tips. Positively ethereal in a spot such as a sunny woodland glade, where it is also likely to grow better. One in Seattle was over 17 ft. tall by 2006, I think I have seen other significantly taller elsewhere in this region. Definitely arborescent once established and doing well, but too new to gardens here to have grown large - and probably not vigorous enough to get as big as a typical green seedling....See MoreRelated Professionals
