Emergency help with countertop choice!
I already ordered Wilson Art Drama Marble laminate and now I am rethinking my choice. The install is set up, but they haven't measured, so I may be able to change. My kitchen cabinets are Sherwin Williams Pure White (Shown on trim piece) which is somewhat warm, and I have a faux brick backsplash (shown on left and right of laminate piece) in neutral light and dark beiges, with some white. Now I think the white in the Drama Marble may look off or blue next to all the other colors. Need some advice and fast! I kind of like the Silver Shalestone. (are both bad) Also the wood underneath is my kitchen floor. Any opinions? Thank you

4 months agolast modified: 4 months agoI have new respect for WilsonArt. I recently used it in a commercial job and was very pleased with the outcome. Make sure the base is nice and thick so you get a good size edge.
I like you counter choice a lt....why not run it up the wall for the backsplash. It will be stunning all by itself.

Help...Choose Tile then Counters or Counters then Tile?!
Comments (11)I agree with Ranton, assuming I understand that you've already decided on the cabinet choice? If you have and you've got the style and stain/paint picked out, I'd do the counters 2nd. I'd do the floors 3rd. Flooring, unless "it's in your face" attention grabbing, tends to just be the anchor and gets relegated to almost being overlooked. If you only want the blaring floor to take center stage,(that's your main objective) then highlight that and let everything else just be a supporting role for the floor. That being said, if you have a lot of movement in the graining of the wood (cabinet), you don't want to fight "movement with movement". So let's say you have a really intense movement in the wood grain that will show through the stain, I'd quiet it down on the granite and/or pick a quartz that is quieter to the degree that the cabinets are already "speaking". ** One thing, are you looking for a certain look or style? Can you tell us that if you know? The reason I ask is that depending on what look you want to achieve be it for example, sleek/modern/minimalist, Tuscan/Mediterranean, French country, Craftsman/earthy colors etc., you get the idea. So write down some basic words that you think of when people say (your) XYZ style. From that, when you are looking at each material or pattern, what is the first word that comes to mind when you see that pattern/color/style in the granite yard or flooring? If what comes to mind belongs to another style/look, you may be about to combine things that don't belong in the same "box". Something to think about...... Oh, definitely choose the granite then choose the backsplash color/pattern/material after that. Regarding flooring, ask your DH the one thing that he wants to first be noticed in your kitchen. I.E. if someone where to come for a visit after it's completed and says they love XYZ about it. What element would be choose as the strongest thing that stands out when you walk into your kitchen? I know on some of these design shows when it comes to pattern be it fabric, upholstery, wallpaper, whatever, they suggest that the "scale" of each element not be the same. Like if you had a large print on a fabric in whatever color you'd want to choose a smaller scale on the other elements in the room so they don't compete. If you've got several large (busy) 'in your face' patterns in the room, they compete with each other. The result is that the eye bounces around constantly from large pattern (i.e. movement) to the next large/busy/heavy movement pattern. What happens is a feeling of vibration and competition between all the elements that is not restful to the eye or mind. I know I'm jumping around here. All these things are coming to mind that might help you so I'm just throwing it out there before I think of something else. Question: Are your and DH's style the same or different? If they are different, there was an HGTV show that integrated the two (sorry, can't think of it or the host's name) but there were some good points in how the host did it. Comments (4)Thank you. I agree. We tried to simulate paint colors on Ben Moore website and didn't like how the greys looked with the cabinets. We are leaning toward BM golden straw for the entire first floor to go with the floors and cabinets. Will it be too yellow? And for the granite we looked at Tanami( recently found out it's also called giallo ornamental). It looks creamy with brown specks on it. Would love to hear comments on these selections. Comments (42)for the handles, may I suggest something to pick up on the hues in the flooring? A little more copper toned. you have light cabs, light floors. I think throwing in a dark ORB w/o actual copper highlights would be too much of a contrast. IMO. cypress park Sandra, I like the porcelain one better than the other one. Does the backsplash have to be done immediately? If the tones in the porcelain tile you picked clash w/the ivory tones in the counter, it could be a problem. However, I did find some copper toned ones that should be avail. these are porcelain/SS, and treated so as not to stain or tarnish. I LOVE these for your kitchen. timeless and gorgeous. Comments (6)I have mustang quartzite in my kitchen and my fabricator allowed me to cut the stone on an angle so the lines meet at my “L”. This is not the common way of cutting— I’m sure it’s not preferred (maybe because it’s more difficult… I don’t know). I have had it like this for over a year with no issues… I don’t walk on it. 🙂 With that said, I used Brown Fantasy (a leftover piece on the fabrication yard) to do my bar area and I absolutely love it. My feeling about the stone laminates is that they are a little ”too beaucoup,” by which I mean they seem to be patterned after the busiest possible part of the stones. Perhaps predictably, I prefer lighter, less busy patterns like those below. I think doing the same laminate as a backsplash would be far preferable to faux brick (which I do not like at all, but if you do, go for it).

I see a few comments that the stone wall isn't great, but it's staying, Also a couple comments liking the Drama Marble. I do like the Beachwalk that eam44 suggested, but I also like the contrast elements of the Drama Marble. The kitchen is a pretty small galley style and only one wall is stone, the opposite wall is just painted. The walls are SW Creamy. Someone asked to see a painted door, so here's a couple more photos. I do appreciate all the input, and if I put laminate in and that wall looks terrible, it's gotta go! lol (that brown spot in lower corner of bottom photo is a shadow, btw)

☝️Agreed. If you are stuck with the faux brick, consider choosing a quieter laminate. But if you are going to reconsider, keep in mind that this is faux brick on an interior wall on top of a 4” backsplash (that’s 3 strikes).

OK, I love your backsplash. And I love your galley-style space. I'd like to see more contrast in your space though. Your rough backsplash helps with texture contrast, so I mean color. Your current kitchen and counter choices make me think you are cautious about color and your 6-panel doors say you like or have a traditional home (not sure what the light fixture is saying). Have you considered a soapstone countertop? Maybe choose medium to dark grey rather than the darkest black? I see yours has a half bullnose edge, and soapstone can be made into a full bullnose easily. If your budget is tight, there is granite that looks like soapstone. And if even tighter, every material has a soapstone look alike, because it's a classic beauty. Should fit your style and comfort range easily. After that, I'd love to see a beautiful runner down the middle of your kitchen and a gorgeous new chandelier. What colors do you like? Warm or cool? Your yellowy-creamy cabinets say maybe you like warm colors, so what about a warm red runner?
