Hi Tammy: Western Australian Government site has a more accurate chart of nutritional deficiency than Cornell University. At very acidic range, nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and molybdenum are deficient. At very alkaline range, phosphorus, iron, manganese, copper and zinc are deficient. I got my soil test via EarthCo. (google it, and you'll see). It's cheaper and more comprehensive my local county Extension. Karl Bapst recommended EarthCo. For $20, you get accurate pH, organic matter, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium level of your soil. My soil pH is 7.7 ... roses are pale but very healthy ... although my soil test revealed most deficient in phosphorus, then a bit deficient in potassium, and barely adequate in calcium (Never mind that I have limestone clay!). When I topdressed my plants with horse manure with iron and trace elements, they become dark green ... just like what Kim (Roseseek) said about horse manure. I haven't gotten manure for my roses since we have constant rain. Yes, with walk-in retail outlets in particular there may be little point in saying anything, as they are often not even the originator of the error. You'd like to do your part to see improvements made, but often irrelevant responses - if not outright arguments - are to be expected. Kind of like here on Garden Web. Paraphrased examples of comebacks I've gotten: "We've had as many people come in here and say it was the other as say it was was that" "We don't want to say anything that could offend the grower, they'll get mad and cut us off" and of course the favorite retort that has also been used on this site multiple times: "We got it from so and so and therefore it must be right" All going back to the people you are trying to tip off not knowing what they have. In the first instance all the manager being talked to had to do was just once crack a book and see that the one it was supposed to be was pink, instead of the orange red they were displaying under the name. Why the people (like me) pointing out (correctly) that it was not the pink one were (supposedly) countered by a more or less equal number of others saying the orange red one they had was correct I cannot explain. Unless a bunch of people had bought the same stock under the wrong name elsewhere, were using that as a basis for their erroneous statements. Nevermind that the cultivar even had "Pink" in the name.

dead is dead.. sip out the dead branches ... prune properly ... ask in the tree forum if you dont get an answer here ... i dont know how active this forum is ... the key is to leave branch stubs ... see link i dont really care about leaves turning weird colors in fall ... heck.. 1/3 of the trees in SE MI are showing signs of coloring ... not much to do.. to save leaves that will fall off inside a few weeks ... not even worry ... i suspect a large window to the left ... perhaps it was spray clened.. or someone scraped by the plant ... in other words superfiscial chem damage ... all that said.. it was a horrible winter last year... i had a lot of small branch death on my few JMs ... seems coincidental that all the damage MIGHT be on the part that wasnt snow covered ... eh?? .. any way to support that theory ??? ken Here is a link that might be useful: link

Hi Lisa, I really know nothing about bird illness. The only thing I could think of was the relatively sudden change of air temperature (it's been the same here in Massachusetts - unseasonably COLD - but I bet it's even colder where you are). I did read that sudden changes in air temperature can affect birds' energy levels (a study done in Scotland). But I don't know whether the way your bird looks could be explained by something like that. Our birds here are still pretty lively and doing the usual things. Is the bird eating or drinking? Is it losing feathers? I wish that I could be more helpful. Would the Cornell Lab of Ornithology site have information? They seem to be a good place to refer to. Best of luck, I know you care so much about the birds.
