Backyard Pool Depth

Hello, I currently have a rectangular (12x24) pool and pool deck that I plan on updating since it's probably at least 40 years old (brick coping, etc).

My pool goes from 3ft to 6ft in the deep end. I've noticed modern pools are barely 3 feet even in the deep end. Is this just a cheaper option for building a pool or is there some other reason to do so? I'm wondering if I should have them fill up the deep end of my pool with more concrete to make it only 3 feet or so as part of the "update".

Not sure where you are swimming that pools are barely 3 ft deep throughout. Not my experience at all.

We built a pool in 2021 and our pool is 30 ft long with depths from 3 ft to 6 ft. Our pool builder said it was a common choice. We also have a 7.5 ft x 10 ft sun shelf that is 6" deep.

There is not an appreciable difference in price for a shallower pool.

It would be a major alteration to make your pool shallower. A structural engineer would have to be involved. A portion of the existing floor would have to be demoed to accept the new concrete. Just not worth it in my opinion.

You could add benches, new steps or a sun shelf. We have done these many times.

Pools we renovate that are the age of yours, we update the plumbing, the equipment, add new lighting, modern tile, plaster and coping materials, etc.,

The majority of my new projects are 5' or 6' deep in the deep section. Most people just want to cool off, so they are not interested in diving.

No diving boards or even ladders on new projects for quite some time.

Endless pool is only for lap swimmers of course. Most people with backyard pools do not swim laps. We have a 16x32 pool which is pretty typical. Also typical was a recommendation that you want to be the depth distance from the house - so 5 feet deep pool should be 5 feet from the house. This is for stability of the foundation but I am sure that is dependent on soil, foundation type and can be overcome with enough money. Seems like a 38x30 would give you 32x26 area (guessing 2 sides on the 38 measurement). You would have 10 feet off the house for a patio and it could be 32 feet wide. That to me is doable and of course you could shrink the width down to 14 or 12. Watch impervious surface requirements - no sense planning on a pool if you can't really do it. Some jurisdictions around me consider a pool impervious but most do not. But you have coping, any patio, and equipment pad.

The short answer is that it can totally be done (I live in the Hollywood Hills - almost everyone has an partial in-ground pool on a slope!) - it's just that the cost to put in a pool can be pretty high depending on your site specifications - you have to consider site access, surveys/soil testing, additional structural support (we are required to have a deepened foundation under our pool - like caissons, etc.). We've been exploring options with different types of pools (there is a company called Soake that specializes in cast concrete plunge pools - they deliver them directly to the site - pretty cool if you are on the East Coast) - but for our lot, they don't result in enough savings compared to traditional pool installation. There are also steel pools ($$$) that are available. Again, your site preparation is what will likely drive up the expense of the project.

Hi Yes we want light colored deck. We first looked at limestone because we love the crisp white tone but that will be too blinding we’re told. (We’re in Houston, TX). The Ivory travertine is still fairly light, and does not have a ton of variation, and should also not show first as much as the limestone. Another option we looked at was ceramic tile in 24” x 48”, but they become much hotter to walk on than the travertine. We love a clean, modern, minimalistic look, and we’ve worked on the inside of the home to reflect that. Outside, it’s still a typical 1998 subdivision brick/siding home.. so the material choices and colors for the pool area need to marry to two to some degree.

@Mystic Pools, LLC Interesting. Was thinking to maybe bring it to 4' from 6' to level it out for some pool volleyball.

Aren't sun shelfs normally added to the shallow end?

Oh, you certainly can. Just be aware that there is a lot involved to make that happen.

Yes, sun shelfs are in the shallow end. Older pools don't have them, and you have the opportunity now.

My deep end is 7ft and I would have gone deeper if I had the room. I also have young kids who love diving down there. I also have a large sun shelf and will say it is a wasted space. It's only about 6-8" deep. If I did it again I would at least have the shelf a foot deep so people can sit in a low chair and still be in the water some. As-is my dogs sure love it haha and my kids play on it some with toys, but even I, who loves to just lay in the sun, prefer a float.
