Alternative for Jonathan apple tree, cedar apple rust
3 months ago
I like Jonathan apples for baking and apple butter and we have a well established one, however we live in the country and it is very susceptible to cedar apple rust. Our friendly neighbor who owns the pasture across the road cut down the cedar trees that were growing in his fenceline at my request, but the problems persists, and there's no way I can coordinate making sure all the cedar trees are down within a 2 mile radius out here. Spraying in the springtime is a losing battle. It's a rare year when we get enough apples to even make a pie, and even in those years, the leaves look unsightly.
So what would be a good alternative in terms of flavor and cooking properties to Jonathan apples that would be less susceptible to cedar apple rust? I've decided it's time to cut the other one down and plant a new one.
