Is teal the next big color trend?? (or is mom just crazy)
Comments (34)I know the common wisdom is that the "Color Czars" meet and decide what the trendy colors will be, but from reading Maria Killam's blog, it sounds like it is more nuanced than that. In a nutshell, the Czars meet and come up with a color forecast which designers & manufacturers then use for their products, but the forecast is based on what the color experts are sensing of where consumers are going. So, they are trying to figure out what people are starting to get bored of and where the trendsetters are going next. I've linked to a post from "Colour Me Happy" where she describes the process. If you want more of the story, read the posts before and after, but the one linked is sufficient for a cursory read. BTW - I'm less than impressed with the newest combinations that they are calling "Pretty Ugly", but that's just my taste. Comments (8)It would be easier to say what I wouldn't use for upholstery fabric! :-D Burlap-like, Suzanis, bird motifs, animal prints, have all had their day IMO. However, unless you want to continue to reupholster furniture every year or every other year it's wise to use an upholstery material that is either classic or that you love enough to not care whether it's trendy or not. Stay away from anything you perceive to be trendy and we likely all have a different take on that. I would only use Suzanis in pillow covers if I loved them as they are currently overdone IMO. Some fabrics I like for seldom used furniture are quilted (think movers' quilts) or oversize thick knitted fabric as it's not been too overdone *maybe*. Unique woods are very big right now so a fabric printed to resemble woodgrain might be coming on trend. Artisan/organic is still trendy for next year altho if you google "trends for 2013" you'll see the usual wide range of CYA ideas including everything I've excluded above. One current trend I like are large scale florals which could be long lasting. Could you post a pic of the chair? Might help to get ideas as to what would be a good upholstery material for that style. I think single chairs are one of those pieces that can be a unique accent and can be done very differently from the rest of one's furniture. At least that's what I'm planning for my most recent acquisition chair. Some thoughts I've had for my chair are a zebra or cowhide pattern (I know, overdone!), a dark/rust red microfiber (I use red accents occasionally), or a patchwork with upholstery samples I already have in all my accent colors (at the moment the top choice). My chair will be painted so that's another consideration for me and so far I can't decide on the color. I'm also limited by cats who think upholstered furniture is their personal scratching post so there are only certain types of fabrics that are safe from them. However if you have fewer limitations than I do there are many choices. You could always "create your own fabric for something totally unique that may never seem out of style." Remember "if something isn't in style, it can't go out of style" - one of Magnaverde's rules....See MoreNext Kitchen trends?
Comments (123)Back to trends - I would like very much to see a trend in induction cooktops/ranges. Whenever the subject comes up, I tell everyone to get an induction cooktop/range, and everyone I know who has is happy. (Fortunately, no one I know has yet had a lemon experience, unlike the poor person whose GE crapped out in May and GE still didn't repair or replace it by July. For shame, GE. But "one bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch, girl.") I understand if you can't afford one, and I understand if you prefer to cook on gas, and I definitely understand if you experience a lot of power outages where you live, but I'm hoping that induction will eventually catch on as it has in Europe. And not just among the kitchen intelligentsia on Gardenweb....See MoreHas gray had it's day? What are emerging home reno trends re colour?
Comments (48)no..I spent a lot of time in tile shops until I found the ones I love enough:) I'm pretty crazy about tiles. Other things, I might not give a damn-tiles, I do actually love. Many many shops we checked out, and the ones I worked with in the end were nothing like Flor and Decor or any other big store for that matter. Different selection, quality, service. But took us lots of time to discover them. The people who make them-these tiles I'm talking about- are very good craftsmen. Believe me. It borders art..thus hard to put price on that, since art is subjective. You attach to it value that's intangible somewhat. what's a rip off? if you ask me my today's visit to a doctor was a rip off and put me in a bad mood. But he's a doctor, and I'm not. He's not a bad doctor too. But I'm really sorry I went there, at this point. I also know some very good doctors-there, I don't mind paying. I mean I do mind but what can I do. It's just that with the doctors I might unfortunately have no choice but to go and pay. And not neccessarily they'll tell me something encouraging either. The result is vaguer, so to say:) With tile, on the other hand,I can decide to continue to dream:) Or choose tiles I still love but can afford, which I eventually did....See MoreRelated Professionals
