Melinda - I feel for you! I'm sorry you've had so many colds for so long. I tell you, every time my latest one acts like it's about to go, then I fall further sick... it's weird to start feeling like you're getting better just to then ache more than before! Well you learn something every day (thank goodness for brain stimulation!). It seems it is called "seed shattering" and is common to Cupheas. It's a form of seed release aimed at widest possible dispersal by wind or water, and not necessarily when all the seed is ripe. Apparently it is also a trait in wild rices which scientists have genetically modified over the years so that mature grains (seeds) are retained instead. Remains to be seen whether my collection of seed germinates! It's certainly a pretty plant.

mine are about 2 inches tall. I noticed leaves a while ago...at least 3 weeks. I live between Dallas and Fort Worth. Mine are planted in a warm area near the curb so the roots were protected. I'm assuming that your zone gives yours plenty of promise. This is my first experience with them returning. I think the last time I likely pulled up the roots. It appears they are returning from the roots.

I looked up the flea beetle and although I couldn't find an exact match, what I have does look very similar in size and shape. Mine are light grey with a thin line in the middle of their backs. Although I tend toward organic, I had to use pyrethrin spray on these buggers. They seem immune to all my "milder" attempts and they can chew down a plant in no time. Just wish I knew why my cuphea (planted in many different areas) always seems to attract them...thanks for your help.
