I wish I knew how to make a link so y'all could just skim past all this junk I am posting, but a few of you talked like you enjoy the pictures.
I went back out after sundown and dug a little more. The pile on the right I dug earlier today, that pile has 26 potatoes in it and came off of a couple of runners I planted from the south garden. The pile on the left came mostly from slips I had placed in solo cups. I did not count them, but there is about 4 plants of potatoes. I feel that the quality of the potatoes off the runners is better.
Madge is holding 2 that I think came from slips, also hard ground, and maybe a little more water than they needed. I liked the way the potatoes on the right looked when I dug then, they were all about the same size lying along that runner, looking like a bunch of young pigs nursing their mother.
The thing I hope to do different nest year (1) amend the soil to make digging easier, (2) plant where I can get the mower and tractor into to clean up this mess. (3) start slips early enough to make sure I have plenty of runners, I may even clip the mother plant and dig out the roots, and even replace it with a runner, although I do like having different sizes of potatoes. If we do anything other than bake the potatoes, I have to do the prep work because Madge does not have enough strength in her hands to peel the potatoes.
Please forgive me for taking over the threat, but I hope someone will find this interesting.
And I still have more potatoes to dig, but my heart is not working very well and I cant do much at a time.
