Healthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 2/4/2024
Comments (41)Oakley, I hope you are seeing an endocrinologist and will enroll in a diabetes management program through your health insurance. It sounds like you need guidance, and that you could be shortchanging yourself by substituting the internet for sound, ongoing medical advice. Jojoco, you’re still well within the healthy BMI range and clearly don’t ”need” to lose weight, but I understand how good it can feel to have control over something like that in your life— especially when you’ve lost control of other things. I do weigh every day and as long as I stay within a five pound range I no longer worry about my weight. Just eating in a restaurant can cause a two lb increase on my scale from additional sodium alone. I have—almost— eliminated alcohol from my diet as was recommended for my autoimmune issues, and that caused a noticeable but not ongoing drop in weight 18 months ago. I track my food intake assiduously, more now to note how I feel and how much energy I have after eating certain foods. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to track and weigh as long as they don’t become ends unto themselves....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 8/18/2024
Comments (21)Annie, I'm so happy that 5:2 intermittent fasting has worked for you! It's been a wonder for me too! I've found it helpful for digestive issues as well. (I am gluten intolerant, very sensitive, probably celiac.) On fasting day I also enjoy sparkling water (La Croix, Bubly, Waterloo) as a little treat that wont't break the fast. I'm continuing with 5:2 intermittent fasting. I have been pretty consistent about doing some 36 hour fasts on some of those 2 fasting days. It's not easy, but it's easier than one would think. With my gluten intolerance I find cooking and eating at home to be a much better option since there are few restaurants that I feel confident I won't risk getting sick from cross-contamination. I am so happy that I finally upgraded from an electric radiant stove to an induction GE Cafe range with double oven. The responsiveness and speed at which pans heat up makes it so much more pleasant to cook. I know it's carb-heavy but I finally tried making some butternut squash risotto over the weekend and it was delicious and quite fun to cook. I'm loving the double oven too. It's helping revive my joy in cooking. My garden veggies are doing better so I'm enjoying fresh cucumber, tomatoes, and eggplant. Weirdly my crookneck summer squash isn't producing much but what it has was delicious. In terms of exercise I really pushed myself over the weekend. Last day of swimming at the 50m pool within walking distance of my house so I swam 2 hours!! on Saturday. Then Sunday I went for 1hour + 20min run all the way up to a park, through part of a trail system, back up hill, then back down home. I've also been able to keep with my morning swimming this week at another (sadly 25m) pool and running on the other days. I have been reluctant to lift weights since my left arm is still bothering me. I have another massage appointment next week that I hope will help. But my massage therapist is trying to sell her house and move away! In terms of non-scale victories, I wore a crop top for the first time in probably two decades! It was just on a hike with a friend, but I decided to brave it. I've dropped weight since last winter and finally felt bold enough to try the look....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of August 25, 2024
Comments (5)I have been doing pretty well the last month-- while my progress is slow, I am finally making actual progress! After 8+ months of basically maintaining, I am seeing losses on the scale and also some non-scale victories (NSVs) ... this has me more motivated than i have been in a year. We had a family party yesterday with an overwhelming amount of food-- I ate well and made good choices but the biggest victory for me was that when sister was loading me up with leftovers, I stuck to only the healthiest choices... leftover steamed shrimp, veggies, pulled chicken with no sauce and a wonderful black bean salsa. No desserts. No mac & cheese. No pulled pork, no snacks. I will say that I was exhausted by the end of the night-- now I was there for 10 hr and playing and tending to a 3 yo for a good portion of that time. I didnt swim but I was literally beside the pool in the sun for a good portion of the day-- but still, I was exhausted. I really need to make time to increase my activity and stamina in the coming weeks. I also need to make big changes to get more sleep during the week. 60 is way too young to be exhausted by a day out and about but the truth is, I woke up exhausted. I need to give my body better rest. As I mentioned in last week's thread, I want to give 5:2 intermittent fasting a try. I will start out with 2 days of 500-600 calories and see how it goes. This week coming I have way more going on socially than usual. I have plans that include dining out Tues, Wed and Thurs-- so I need to work my "fasting" days around that. I am starting today and will continue tomorrow. I don't know if doing my 2 days back to back is an issue but for the first week, I will be more focused on the planning/calorie counting required. I'll likely split them up in the weeks to come. How are you all doing? Happy with your progress? Any new goals or plans for the coming week?...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 9/29/2024
Comments (17)3katz- so glad your new foot is working and you are back to walking! Sueb- have a fun time on your safari! feathers - there's something about jeans that keeps me in line :) kswl - that salad looks so good. I did not do well on raw salads this summer like I did last year, but yours looks delicious. Not sure we still have good corn around here still. gscience - still jealous of your Pilates! funky - I, too will be waiting on your meatloaf recipe! Sounds interesting. Last week was not a great exercise week - only 1 weight session and one pickelball. It rained most days, and I could not get motivated for inside exercise. It has me worried about the upcoming weather and time change. DH is very into biking and ordered a Zwift - I think - some sort of indoor bike trainer, so I'm hoping I like that. I have enough equipment here to workout, I just really prefer to be outdoors. We'll see. I went to bed super early all week, and the time hasn't even changed yet. The weather looks better the next couple weeks, but then I need a plan! I roasted two big sheet pans of veggies the last couple weeks, so that has been really helpful. I have maintained my small weight loss from our Europe trip 5 weeks now. I'm definitely at some sort of set weight for my body, I can gain or lose the same 4-5 pounds, but I seem to end up here at the same number. I did up my weights for several exercises last week, so there is progress being made in some form! My colonoscopy pre appointment got canceled again. This will be the 4th attempt coming up. I am trying :)...See MoreRelated Professionals
