Comments (41)Oakley, I hope you are seeing an endocrinologist and will enroll in a diabetes management program through your health insurance. It sounds like you need guidance, and that you could be shortchanging yourself by substituting the internet for sound, ongoing medical advice. Jojoco, you’re still well within the healthy BMI range and clearly don’t ”need” to lose weight, but I understand how good it can feel to have control over something like that in your life— especially when you’ve lost control of other things. I do weigh every day and as long as I stay within a five pound range I no longer worry about my weight. Just eating in a restaurant can cause a two lb increase on my scale from additional sodium alone. I have—almost— eliminated alcohol from my diet as was recommended for my autoimmune issues, and that caused a noticeable but not ongoing drop in weight 18 months ago. I track my food intake assiduously, more now to note how I feel and how much energy I have after eating certain foods. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to track and weigh as long as they don’t become ends unto themselves....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 6/16/2024
Comments (13)legomom, there is absolutely nothing wrong with walking some while running! I do that all the time! Probably more than I should but it makes my dog happy to pause and get some sniffing done while I walk and rest a little. Running elevates the heart rate and burns more calories, but if you get in more distance by walking some of the distance, it's still a huge win. I've been doing well with lap swimming in the mornings despite busier than usual pool. I really look forward to the summer months where I can access the 50m pool. I was lucky this week that the weather turned quite cold (40 one morning, 50 this morning) and so fewer people came to use the few lanes left from the swim team that has completely taken over 6 of 8 lanes in the pool. The coach is really nice and actually gave me some kicking pointers this morning, but I wish they would equally share the pool with the community instead of taking 6 lanes during the only 50m time. On non-swimming mornings I have been consistently running. On Sunday I dragged my dog on a longer run, about what we were doing at the end of last summer. The weather was nice so I took an extra long route that took us up to a park with a trail system and ran a little on the trails. Hoping to continue pushing our distance. To be honest, my dog is probably holding me back but I love her company and she needs exercise too. (The vet has checked her and there is nothing wrong, she just doesn't always want to keep the same pace as I do.) Yesterday I had work off for the Juneteenth holiday and so after taking the dog for a run, my husband and I went golfing (walking, no cart) and that was a nice extra bit of exercise. I even did much better than I usually do. (I'm not a good golfer so minor successes here.) The weather was really lovely and not too hot. I may not be getting weight lifting done every week day, but I've managed several days this week so that feels like a win. I need to keep it up. It's just tough to find time right now at lunch. I've had several weeks of just back to back to back meetings right over lunch time. I'm hoping things will improve a little and I can be more consistent. I continue to fast. Last week I managed 2x 36hr fasts and this week I may try the same. I did a 36hr fast on Monday and I'll see how I feel by the end of the day today if I need to eat some dinner or can power through until morning. I have been probably worse than usual with snacking, including chips. I'm also still really struggling with extra people in the house. (These things may be related.) Last night I was trying to prep some veggies for a healthy dinner and my 19 year old niece decided she wanted to eat cereal and toast and plopped right down where I was trying to prep so I had to move to avoid gluten contamination. She wasn't doing anything wrong (there are seats at the peninsula) but it's tough to feel like my safe space isn't safe....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 8/11/2024
Comments (11)Glad you are back, Funky! I've had a super busy week so I am on the treadmill to get to 10,000 steps. I did Pilates today. This is such a weird week before classes because we have a lot of meetings and there are a lot of last-minute student issues we need to work on. Students wanting to change their major or do an internship without ever talking to anyone about it, or need help building their schedule which they should've done months ago. I am beat! Little girl kitty had her radioactive treatment for hyperthyroid the other day, so it has been an adventure since. We are just not sleeping well worried about her. She did great but hated the 45-minute car ride home. Now we must keep her and Blue separated. She can only be on our laps 10 min per day or be next to Blue max of 10 min, and we need to have them not share bowls or litterbox until the 26th. I also have to use a litterbox liner and change them out every other day which I did today. Wear gloves and then immediately wash hands after scooping. Another guy who was picking up his cat at the same time said he has a room above the garage and the cat will have to stay there, but we do not have that luxury. Last night we put Blue in the guest BR and let Panda have run of the house while we closed the BR door. Panda is more likely to cry than Blue. Healthy eating schedule and exercise are a little off, but hopefully once things settle in, I will be OK. I did make it to Pilates group sessions twice this week but couldn't due the private session because we had to drive to the vets on Wednesday. I am still tracking. Have a good weekend everyone. It is a little cooler and less humid so it feels so much better. Looking forward to morning step aerobics....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 9/17/2024
Comments (21)funky, your situation is a bit different than mine. For me it's that management keeps changing. We have been bought and sold so many times in my 40 years I've lost count. The previous one was a good one. They let us do our thing. They were supportive. My product is a very big money maker and our margins are very high. The last purchase was OK for a couple years. They left us alone but now they are changing everything. Putting people in charge that don't understand our business and think they're the smartest person in the room. I'm just over it. I'm trying to get some sort of package. For a while after the purchase they were giving year packages but I think those might be over. My ideal situation would be to stay until March (get my bonus; too much money to leave behind) and get a package that pays me to at least August when I can go on Medicare. We'll see. I did tell my boss I would be willing to consult during the package time frame an agreed on number of hours per week. We'll see how this goes. In any case, Aug 2025 is my definite end date in any situation and that just seems too far away! Tina, that is encouraging. Thank you. I remember a while after my mom retired, my dad jokingly said can you go back to work so I can see you more often. She was so busy! I will probably find some volunteer work I would enjoy. Definitely plan to see friends a lot more often. And of course, the grandchildren (they live 1 hr away). My DH also has very flexible hours. He can work from anywhere and not work whenever he wants. He's often doing some work while we're on a beach on vacation. He loves what he does and it's mostly not stressful. He doesn't plan to retire until he's 70. Of course, a couple years ago he said 75, so that could continue to creep in! Today is making me crabby -- it's a gorgeous day here. Perfect temps, low humidity. I keep looking out the window and wishing we went into town for a nice lunch and to walk around. When I retire, it's exactly what we will do on days like this because as I said, DH isn't tied to a work clock. I just cannot wait....See MoreRelated Professionals
