Insulated garage door, garage not insulated?

I've been watching some of the videos and reading comments about the pros and cons of different ways to insulate a garage door (fiberglass, foam, reflectix, air gaps, extra weight, fire rating, etc.). My garage isn't heated or cooled. I live in the north and the garage faces east, so it gets quite hot in the summer and cold in the winter. My question is, if the walls and space (attic in my case) above the garage are not insulated, does having an insulated garage door really provide any benefit?

Is your garage finished, attic accessible? can you put insulation batts between

the studs and joists?

If yes, go with an insulated door - that’s a beginning.

Here’s a pic of ours. Northern IL and heater barely ran to maintain 50 degrees but would quickly warm to house temperature for project work or expanded entertaining space.

Thanks. what is insulated in yours re walls and ceilings? and which of those are exterior vs connected to the house?

My garage is finished, but not by me and was done without insulation. The attic is accessible to put batts or blown-in. Getting insulation into the walls would require making holes in the drywall I think.

Is the rest of the garage insulated? If I remember correctly the cost difference wasn't that big and worth it for a more rigid door and just keeping the cars more comfortable inside. Ie not as hot or cold inside, but if you didn't spend the money to insulate the garage then ... My old house had a detached garage without insulation on doors and walls. In TX that was fine and it didn't get very hot or cold enough to bother me.

My heating bill is about $180 per month - natural gas. I've been heating this garage for since it's been built - 20 years." We had only electric heat and I lived in a high KW charge area. The first two winter months (Dec, Jan) ran us $400.00 a month for 2400 sq ft house and 20X24 garage - fully insulated. Shutting off garage dropped it to $250.00 for the next month. The entire next winter was about $250.00 a month (no garage heat). The OP needs to weigh how costly his rate of heating will be for the winter months and add it to the cost of insulation. I did not think an extra $150.00 a month to preheat my car was worth it in the winter months.

AlabamaTreeHugger --- The attic above the garage has the same ventilation as the rest of the house -- there's a brand new Gerard Stone Coated Steel (Canyon Shake) roof installed on counter battens. The new roof, in and of itself, should keep the house and, therefore, the garage cooler. We are NOT going to cut any holes in the new roof for any reason. Yes, there is a window in the east wall of the garage, and it does open. There is a window in the pedestrian door on the west wall of the garage, but that window does not open.

@frankmarsh - only the back garage wall connects to the house and only 2/3 of it. With bedrooms above, the garage ceiling is well insulated. I had batts installed in the walls during the build.

Ceiling is where greatest heat loss occurs. Insulate there for sure if you plan to temperature control the garage.

If your garage door is insulated but the garage itself isn’t, it’s a bit of a mixed situation. The door will help keep out some of the cold or heat, but without insulation in the walls or ceiling, you might still feel some temperature fluctuations. It could help to insulate the garage walls if you plan to use it for things like a workshop or just want it more comfortable.
