Matte Floors and Honed Marble Counter tops
Comments (7)Thanks for your replies. FIRSTHOUSE. I love your kitchen. It is BEAUTIFUL. Your kitchen looks both "homey" , "clean and classic" and ELEGANT just as I imagined mine to be. We are having our cabinets made with glass fronts like yours also. And yes we have the same look in floors. We just had ours oak floors refinished with Miracle Oil, it is suppose to be tougher than poly, ( used in the Grand Ole' Opry dance floor.) Do you like them? We don't have our baseboards back up or furniture in the rooms yet , people think they are not finished. Here's another question FIRSTHOUSE, in the photo your counters look like marble. DH would like granite over marble over concern for marble's reputation. I've never seen white granite, can you tell me more about it ? What is its coloration ? Tell me all about your kitchen. Thank you so, so much for your inspiration....See MoreHoned Carrera Counters with Calacatta Gold Mosaic Backsplash
Comments (3)Haven't done it, not to say it couldn't be done, but.....I'd be cautious about putting the two next to each other. The pic above looks warm tan-cream on my monitor. What does your Carrera look like? During our countertop journeys, DH and I looked at Carrera (not white Carrera but regular, with lots of gray) and Calacatta Gold. Placed next to each other, the underlying whites in our samples were VERY different in tone, with the Carrera's blue-ish cool undertone up against the CG's warmer cream. We found the same when trying to pick a cabinet white for each: Carrera took a colder, starker white or a blueish-white best, while CG's best match was a yellowy cream....See MoreCarrera Marble Kitchen countertops
Comments (23)Shouldn't marble not stain if it's sealed? I think the real issues are etching and scratching. Those pictures are helpful for people, but they should also realize they're kind of the "worst case" scenarios. Carrera will etch, every bit as much as those pictures show, but it usually won't look as bad as those pictures, if that makes any sense. The pictures have to be taken at the right angle to get the etches to show for a picture. That last picture looks so awful because it's stained, which doesn't seem to happen to most people who have their counters sealed when needed. The first three pictures are fairly representative of what friends with carrera-type marbles live with, but their etches are not very noticeable when you walk in their kitchens. On the whitish marbles at least, those etches would not be noticeable in most light conditions to someone who's just walking through the kitchen. (I don't know about the third one that's brownish--I've never seen anyone with a polished counter in that color of marble.) A good friend of mine has carrera counters in her kitchen that gets lots of light, and she has hundreds of etches. Unless you bend your head and crane your neck to look for them, you won't notice them. Her honed finish makes a big difference to this--with a polished finish, the difference in finish between the etch and the rest of the counter will be more noticeable. She also doesn't have direct sunlight hitting them through most of the day. I also have marble counters, but they're dolomitic marble, so they're a bit slower to etch. In other words, we can spill lemon juice on them, and it won't etch if we wipe if up within a few minutes. Our counters are just as soft as non-dolomitic marble in most places, and we have thousands of tiny scratches on our polished finish counters. Most of them are like the ones visible in the fourth picture, and with the veining of our counters, they're not noticeable unless you look for them. Over time, the polished finish is developing its "patina" and getting less shiny. They're still gorgeous, and I'd do them again in a heartbeat. But I would not have risked polished counters with carrera. I did want to mention the scratching because I think it sometimes gets overlooked as people worry about etching. Both will happen to marble, no matter how much you baby it....See MoreKitchen Island - Carrera or Calcatta
Comments (22)I think you while you love the Carrera and your DH loves the Calacatta the post is really about the worries of having marble. Are you second guessing your marble? I only ask because I am counter searching and know the feeling in my heart as I peruse slabs trying to decide what will work, care, cost and love. "Also as you all know Marble is easily damaged and I'm expecting that with the Carrera. (Character) I don't know if I would feel the same about damaged expensive Calcatta. FYI they are both honed. I have to decide with the next couple of days. Help!!!..." Why not buy the carrera and put the extra money aside so that you can re polish or hone any stains that come up over the course of a few years. You get to have marble that I believe you have always wanted and you have a little set aside to pay for any damage that might come up in a couple of years. Marble has been around for a 1000 years. If you don't mind the patina, the occasional stains and the wear (imagine a pair of favorite jeans with mustard stains, holes in the knees and torn at the hems) you will ultimately be happy with your kitchen. ~boxer...See MoreRelated Professionals
