Well, your going to need to plant them in a good dark soil without rocks and good drainage. Plant them like any other plant or flower. You dig a hole twice the size of the root system. Then you put the plant in the hole and cover it gently with dirt. Fill with dirt up to the point slightly above where the roots start to come out. Then you give it a good soaking. You dont need to put a cage around it because deer and other animals hate the taste of walnut. Also, be sure not to plant it near a road or a house. The nuts can be a real mess sometimes.

well .... in my neck of the woods.. catalpa is a fully deciduous tree in winter ... IT IS SUPPOSED TO LOSE ITS LEAVES WHEN the LIGHT AND TEMP levels of fall tell it to go to sleep ... most plants that go dormant.. need to go dormant .. so HOPEFULLY the one of yours that went dormant.. will come back out of dormancy ... and it wouldnt surprise me if the other went into dormancy ... i am not an ID expert ... other will come by and give you the latin name of your plant... use that to google CULTURAL REQUIREMENTS ... of the latin name ... if these peeps fail .. there is a NAME THAT PLANT FORUM ... you may have to free them to the great outdoors.. if they can survive indoors the rest of this winter ... unless its still possible to put them outside in your zone ... i am not clear what DC means, zone wise ... if you love them as pets ... you are borderline on KILLING THEM WITH TOO MUCH LOVE ... be careful with that.. they are trees... we plant them in mother earth.. and given just a LITTLE care.. they can live for centuries... try to raise them in the house... and you are in for no end of trouble ... get the ID ... and we can go from there. .. happy holidays.. ken

where are you ... when was it moved ... was it leafed out at the time.. how do you rule out transplant stress ... what is your definition of sapling.. how large is it ... how did you plant it.. what was the weather since planting ... after planting.. what was your aftercare protocol ... did you fert a stressed plant ... why did you default to spraying goo on it ... stressed plants have a way of coming down with all kinds of secondary problems ... but if you don't ID and fix the primary problem ... it will continue to be problematic .... and to be clear ... i am thinking your plant is primarily stressed ken

over fertilization may cause them to not go into dormancy properly ... if that lush green growth doesnt properly harden off ... i would probably stop watering them now ... and try to start to slow them down ... if zone appropriate... they do not need to be protected from cold ... they are not children that need to be swaddled ... where did the seed come from???... local? the problem with the garage.. is that it is probably 2 zones warmer ... and maintaining dormancy might be an issue with a warm spell in the dead of winter ... or cause early growth.. before frost or freeze is over ... easiest way ... in late nov .. place in full winter shade.. and just tip the pot over.. so it doesnt accumulate water when the pot is frozen solid.. like the ground ... roots wont care about the cold.. but they might die frozen in an ice cube ... does anyone know.. does seed from a weeping tree.. actually give weeping seedlings???? you are on the verge of loving them to death ... try to avoid that.. treat them like the trees they are ...
