It´s all about pruning and training of those lanky roses
Comments (64)I have a question about Gertrude Jekyll. I pruned mine after its last flush to about 2-2.5ft and it looked pretty tidy for about two weeks It's since put out a couple of basals and new growth that has to be 5ft at least at this point. Gertrude Jekyll on 8/2/16 Gertrude Jekyll 8 days later As you can see, my GT is looking kind of gangly - Clearly I didn't prune it hard enough! My question is is it necessary to wait until after the cane blooms to cut it down? This is sitting out in front of a window at my apartment, and is kind of an eye sore to look at, plus, I don't want to draw unwanted attention. If it helps to know, I'm in NC zone 7b. AKA humid and hot!...See MoreBuck roses: Prairie Sunrise, Prairie Sunset, Sunbonnet Sue, etc.
Comments (20)Thank you all for sharing your experiences with Buck roses and enticing me to other varieties. You, evil rose people, you! I am very pleased to hear about PS. As I mentioned, it was an impulse buy and never thought about it or never paid any attention to it. I was so fascinated with the large 4 inch bloom with intoxicatingly sweet fragrance. The bush was in a 2 gallon container and about 1 ft tall. When I go back to the nursery and see the roses, I have a better idea about how they are. My garden contains some Buck roses also - Carefree Beauty, Earth Song, Aunt Honey, and Blue Skies. All the roses are indeed carefree except BS. BS had very strong citrus fragrance and acted like HT, but he decided to not grow....See Morehuge healthy canes now on the ground!
Comments (10)Dearborn, I believe it could be wind. I had one winter when the voles struck with a vengeance and I had to prune many of my large shrub roses down to (and some below) the ground. John Cabot sent out tons of new canes from the sides of that old woody center. Just about the time the new canes reached 4 ft. tall, we had a thunderstorm roll through and I found all that beautiful new growth laying on the ground, just barely attached. Straightening the canes up was enough to detach them all and I could have kicked myself for not having braced them earlier with some kind of support until they hardened off. That set poor JC back 2 years. I think it's the angle of the new canes sprouting from a rose that is so severely pruned that makes them weakly joined at first and I believe you're right on with your wire cylinders - good luck and hope you don't have any more lost canes! Comments (3)When I moved into my home 25 years ago there was a beautiful 5ft X 5ft shrub rose growing in full sun. My mother wanted it 4 years later, so, we transplanted it to her house. It gets dappled sunlight from trees at her house and grows very lanky and has thin canes to this day. 6ft x 3ft. and has to be tied up. If you move enchanted evening to a much sunnier location, it may grow quite different....See MoreRelated Professionals
