I had to use branches because I planted too early. They do like to grow up fast once they get going. I ended up planting the branch too once they went outside. My advice, unless you have an area where they can climb indoors, I'd wait till close to planting time to start vining plants. I did transplant 2 in a hanging planter and hung it in a sunny area inside the dining room and left it there all year into the fall. Suhweet! Deederbug

By "Black Eyed Susan vine", I'm guessing you mean the annual Thunbergia alata. If the pods are fully developed (and not immature), you can leave them to dry out and plant next spring (or indoors a few weeks before the last frost). Once dry, they'll keep better under refrigeration. Lobelia can self-seed and you may well get plantlets next spring by sprinkling seed on the ground now. However, I think it's too late in the year to expect cuttings placed in the ground to take root and overwinter.

Thanks so much Noinwi!! I had LOTS of those green husks. I kept waiting for them to turn brown. Maybe I can find some seeds in the husks. If they fell on the ground and froze will they still be any good?? Or, maybe the one in my garage will be a seed donor! I love the white and light peach blooms, so I would be thrilled to get seeds for those instead of just the orange ones. I will check out the green husks ASAP. How are BES Vines pollinated? If I can't find seeds in the green husks does that means they never got pollinated? I had lots of bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, wasps, moths and we even have bats, but since these aren't native to our area maybe they didn't get what they needed for seed development. I planted it last year to cover an old wire fence & we really enjoyed it. Two mistakes I made: if you look at the picture there is a moonflower growing in the midst of the BES vine; first I was going to do moonflowers, then changed my mind & forgot to remove the moonflower. The other mistake...and this was on the seed packet...to plant 6" apart. More like 15 inches would be better because these were really crowded.
