Vine weevil damage??

last modified: 4 months ago

Hi there,Yesterday I planted a standard form Blue Bird hibiscus. It had been sat in it's pot in our garden for about a month, and despite being watered, definitely has been stressed by the heat (the leaves had recently turned yellow) . I went to plant it yesterday, and found it to be balled and burlaped, and the clay soil it was in was incredibly heavy, I would say the heaviest I have lifted for an plant that size. When I went to take the burlap off, I tugged at it, and the ball of soil and root ball literally fell apart, leaving only the base of the roots of the plant in tact. I was pretty shocked, because I had never seen this before, but put it down to the soil being really heavy, and it breaking the delicate roots as it fell apart. I did not see any grubs or insects when I inspected the roots and soil, although this was not in my mind at the time.I proceeded to plant to hibiscus with no further problem. However, now I am concerned that the roots may have been damaged by vine weevil larvae, or some such insect, because of how easily the rootball fell apart. Is this something I should be worried about, or am I just overthinking it? I went to inspect the plant and soil this morning, and I saw no evidence of larvae or beetle in the soil or plant. The leaves do not have notches in them or any other damage, other than having turned yellow. The soil was also incredibly hard, so I don't know if it would be possible for larvae to move through it.Any advise and thoughts would be much appreciated, thank you 🙏
EDIT I have placed photos of the plant in the comments. The roots that broke away looked healthy to me, but very fine.
