Iris Seed Pods and Seed pictures. Information?
Comments (4)Your pods are fine. As they dry they will get lighter and eventually start to crack open. If you don't want the seeds to fall out you can wrap the pod in a fine mesh, or keep checking them and harvest just as they start to open. The seeds will be smooth and pale brown at first but will dry dark and wrinkly like the ones in your picture. As long as they have some thickness to them I think they can sprout - nothing ventured... Plant them 1 inch deep in pots and leave outside all winter, they should sprout in early spring. I have had some luck with pods which were broken off before they had a chance to mature, so don't worry. Chad...See Moreand do you know why plantaginea comes true from seed
Comments (3)I am ashamed to admit that I just now added Plantaginea to my collection a few weeks ago! I was browsing through the shade houses at my local nursery, and spotted what they had LABELED as Plantaginea. Fortunately for me, they happened to be in bloom. Guess what, most of them DID NOT have the characteristic 6-inch white flowers (the flowers were 3-4 inches), but I spotted one that did. YAY! Other peeps would probably not know to look for that, but I did and so now I FINALLY have it. And over the last few weeks I have enjoyed the very LARGE fragrant blooms that do bloom in the evening. Oooooh, that scent is so heavenly... Ken, when I was at the nursery, I thought of you and that picture you post of the flowers lined up next to each other showing the relative size difference. I was dooped once before and bought what was labeled Plantaginea, but it was not in bloom. When it did finally bloom the next season, guess what, it wasn't Plantaginea. Doh! I should add, this is probably the 3rd season I've had Aphrodite, and it still won't bloom for me. It won't even send up scapes, stupid piece of carp. Bleh. Good thing I like the nice apple green, wide-veined leaves, otherwise I'd toss it to the curb. Hmmm, now that's a thought. I bet it would bloom if I did that. Go figure. Buff...See MorePlantaginea vs. plantaginea 'Grandiflora'
Comments (14)ok.. it took me an hour.. on a rainy day.. to find both zilis and schmid ... both list grandiflora as an archaic synonym to the species plantaginea ... if you have it.. and bought the other... you bought what you already had .... what surprised me.. is that the flower size is variable ... BUT ALWAYS BIGGER than the cultivars at 3 inches ... VERY interesting history in the schmid tome... it was in joe bonapartes garden at malmaisson ... so popular ... that it was call the parisian funkia for a while ... originally brought in by seed sent from macao ???? and grown in hothouses.. before they discovered it would survive outdoors ... Zillis echoes it all .... did i ever tell you.. how many hosta i bought duplicates of.. because .. what i consider a dishonest seller... selling under old names .... back in the day.. some sellers lost a lot of money based on such [i didnt order from them again] .. its no excuse that they didnt know .... one guy even sent the same plant under two names.. in the same box .... never ordered from him again .... ken...See MoreThe seed pods on my hardy hibiscus have now split, can i take seeds?
Comments (1)tlbean, Yes. If it split open and you can see the seeds, they are ready. You can plant them now if you want. You can also save them til next year, it's up to you. Congrats on wanting to grow your own, you never know what color you will end up with. It's fun!...See MoreRelated Professionals
