Welcome to my world! I have a condo with lots of openings and very little light. Your rug needs to be big enough to be under your entire seating arrangement. A ceiling light does no one any favors in the living room. Much better is a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. If the kids need another surface for toys or games, get a round upholstered flat top ottoman with a large shallow tray for the top. To compensate for the lack of light, when you get your lights, get lamp bases that are mirrored. If you are in the market for accessories or wall decor, be sure to get lots of reflective surfaces (mirrored frames, mirrors, etc.). Also, stick to light and bright colors.

A much larger rug will make this area into a cozy and beautiful room. I'd also suggest finding a different rug, one that has both warm and cool colors in it. Right now this room looks rather cold and almost clinical, in spite of the nice furnishings, and warmer colors, which will also marry the rug more with the wood flooring, would help a great deal in that regard. Consider tribal rugs that have both red and blue in them.

Sorry, not sure why the picture didn't post. Here it is again. RL, I like the round pendant and the pleated one in your first set of suggestions. Is that a Nelson bubble pendant? Also, I should have given a few dimensional details. The table is 36" wide at the ends, 40" wide in the center. Ceiling height is 92".
