Comments (26)Jojo - I am sure you are experimenting this week and I hope you find some successful foods. I will say, oatmeal is the first thing that gets either skipped for breakfast or modified a great deal when people first start wearing a glucose monitor. It is known for its sudden glucose spike. Accompany that with two pieces of toast and the sudden spike followed by a sharp fall could certainly have you feeling that way. I do best with fat, fiber and protein for breakfast, but sometimes I will have oatmeal. But only 1/3 cup mixed with 2 T chia seeds and some cinnamon and walnuts, along with breakfast chicken sausage for protein. I'm trying very hard to minimize my processed food, and it is so hard for me. I really do enjoy eating out and snacking. I need to cook more, but it takes so long :) And I can never figure out what to make. Today I thought I was doing well, but I still had a Papa Steve's Bar for breakfast and Masa chips with my avocado. Now, technically papa steve's has no junk and the Masa chips are made with beef tallow instead of seed oils, but they are still processed in some manner. I will keep trying to eat more whole foods! I am very good with fruit and nuts, so there's that :) I have been walking this week and got in several hours of pickleball and one strength training workout, so that part is going well. The podcast I listened to today said 20 minutes 3 times a week for strength training, and after that the returns start to diminish. I can do that - 20 minutes is nothing in my day. I am going to try harder to be more consistent with that....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 3/31/2024
Comments (19)@texanjana .. i am so sorry you are dealing with long covid. I know a few here have/are. I am glad to hear things are improving ... i hope they continue to improve. Also I am impressed that you have given up sugar, gluten and alcohol ... any one of them is a feat but all three at the same time? Impressive! @Sueb20 .. great idea to give yourself A day a month to go to the bakery for 2 servings! I do that with pizza and knowing I can and will have pizza soon is enough to calm my cravings for it. I'll swap out burgers for pizza in the warmer months. @barncatz.. i don't want to live forever lol but I don't want to die next year. I am generally healthy enough but I have enough working against me that I want to do the best I can... and I want to LOOK the best I can. I don't think it is shallow to want to be and look your best unless it becomes an obsession. @feathers .. you have been so consistently on track. You have to feel great about that ... it's a big accomplishment but also has great paybacks for you. Congratulations! @jsk .. maybe just start with changing one thing each week... but commit to that one thing. I find that easier to get rolling than to try to do every single thing "right"... especially when I have fallen off track. Just an idea. Make it a great week all! And thanks for being here!...See MoreAugust 2nd Week 2024
Comments (44)Kim, I'm so sorry about Richard. The weather is absolutely miserable. Remember when Dawn brought her chickens indoors during a particularly extreme heat wave? I'm worried about mine too. I do have fans on them, but the one that oscillates doesn't oscillate any longer, so not all of them get the breeze. Then, there's the broody hen that won't leave the nesting box. It's dangerous for sure. It just makes me incredibly sad. This weather just affects me that way--hot and no rain is the worst to me. I had a good day, tho. Got to see my baby and my baby daughter. Got some work done for one of my jobs too. And other good things. I did water some things tonight, but that's about it in the garden. I can't remember if I already said this or just thought it. BUT, honestly, knowing what I know now, I would finance many Vego style beds and do my garden that way. BUT....it had been fun (mostly) and a learning experience piecing it all together like it is now. Larry, this isn't our best okra year. It did like the rain that we got last Sunday. Anyway. Again, sorry, Kim. Just wanted to check in and say "hi"....See MoreLast Week of August 2024
Comments (28)Glenda, I have a hard time sitting still in general until dark. I think that's one reason I like winter. I'm forced to come inside and sit a bit more. I do enjoy watching a good series in the evenings during the darker part of the year. Your okra is amazing. And the flowers in front of it, beautiful. Larry, I had a hair appointment yesterday too. Just a 2 inch trim. I missed my June appointment. The woman who does my hair is BFFs with my friend who I work with. They were sorta in a fight and I didn't know what my obligation was in all of that. Anyway, they're good again...and I got my hair trimmed. My natural hair color (when I was younger) is auburn (or a darker red). My natural color now is confusing. LOL It's sort of a combination of grayish-brown, and strands of auburn along with silvery-white stands. I've been coloring it a medium brown because red is hard. It rarely looks natural. BUT, my natural auburn still comes out after a few washes. I thought it would be easier to go with brown, but it's not. I probably should spend the money and have a professional do it, but it's SO expensive. My sister has an easier time. She got the lighter red color. (My mom was a strawberry blonde and my dad had the same hair color as I do....or did). Anyway, her lighter red seems to be easier to color and looks more natural. I did 23 and Me a long time ago. You can look up your "raw data" with it. I looked at the "red hair" SNPs. I received a T allele from each parent on rs1805008. T is considered the risk allele because it's associated with a higher risk of melanoma and a likelihood of having red hair. I just read something the other day about UVs and that SNP. Probably why I'm so sensitive to sunlight. So, when I look like a dork in the garden--all covered up when it's 100 outside, that's why. I wanna look cute in a tank top and flipflops---but nope. Anyway....that was a lot of rambling geek talk. But, it is interesting that the darkness or lightness of one's hair is a separate thing. 23 and Me says I'm more likely to have dark hair. It also says I'm more likely to have red hair. Which explains the auburn, which is a darker red color. Anyway again.... Looks like we'll miss out on the rain this time. We had a few sprinkles this morning. We've been running errands in Norman this morning, but I'm about to head outside to water a few things. I got in at 8 last night. Did get the okra picked. It had been 5 days so a lot of it is too big but ran out of daylight. I want to plant my cabbages and greens, but also don't want to get too dirty because Tom and I are going to babysit this evening. I'll get them planted tomorrow. There's really not much new in the garden to talk about. Things look as good as can be expected without adequate rain. Jen, I'm with you. The marching band is so much more interesting! Did you get some good rain? It looked like your area had a good soaker. Larry, I enjoy your pictures....See MoreRelated Professionals
