Bathroom Storage area

Looking for some advice on what to do with this huge amount of storage in our upstairs bathroom. My husband and I are thinking of putting in some shelves but not sure how to go about doing it, and not sure if anyone else has experienced this as we are looking for before and after photos of a similar project to give us some ideas. As you can see from the photos, the bathroom is quite tight. Thanks in advanced!

just like you would any shelf... one shelf at a time. measured to fit the angle, spaced to your needs.

I would look into roll out drawers for the bottom and and simple shelves above on side cleats. Baskets on the shelf above the roll out might help to access your storage.

How deep and how wide and how tall is the interior?

We have his and hers vanities that each have towers with adjustable shelves, outlets, and a valance. I prefer to have just the pretty countertop accessories out so I designed my side with all concealed storage. I'm right-handed so the things I use each day are on the right side cabinet, toiletries etc on the top and hairdryer & curling brushes on the bottom. The left side has storage for some misc bathroom accessories and my contact lens supplies on the top. My curling iron and brushes fit on the bottom. My husband's vanity and towers are very similar but he preferered to have open shelves on the lower half of his towers so that the things he uses each day are in view. I love threads like this because there are always some really creative ideas that I would have never thought of!

wowed, I agree with your response, and it's interesting to me. I would want at least sound, if not visual, separation, between a lavatory/dressing area and a bedroom. It's interesting to compare the bedroom/lavatory area/toilet and bath area layers to a palace set up: the anteroom, the throne room (no pun intended) and then private quarters. In the same way, access and function are layered. I think most users would agree this sort of layering is a good thing. Contrast this to the evolution of design of the kitchen/dining/family room area of a house. For me, sound separation of activities (eg., tv watching vs. a conversation in a dining room, or relaxing in the family room without the din of dish stacking) or visual separation (chatting with guests in the dining room while not worrying about how the busy food prep area looks) or even olfactory separation (reading a book in the family room while onions are sliced and sauteed in the kitchen). The grand, open flowing floorplan for these areas is popular, but for me, I prefer a little segregation, especially as the number of users and potential simultaneous uses goes up. Seems to me, as the average household size has shrunk and more people are living in a house of only 2 or 3 people, sure, the open floor plan can work. But for now at least, I want a little bit of separation of activities, and I like my "antiquated" floor plan, with separate kitchen, dining room, family room (tv) and living room (piano). A tv and piano in the same room would be a nuisance for us. So I guess on a more micro level, I'm looking to separate activities in the bathroom. Talley sue - of course you have a heat pipe, you're in NYC! LOL! Mine was rusted, peeling and thoroughly disgusting when I first moved in, so when I decided to paint the bathroom, I scraped all that nasty paint (and God knows what else) off with steel wool and then spray painted the pipe with heatproof paint. It has held up reasonably well, as you can see - this was 5 years ago. However, I hate the way it looks and I hate the fact that I occasionally bump against it when getting out of the shower (I've burned my unmentionables more than once, ouch!), so it needs to be covered. It's the only source of heat for the bathroom but our building is so overheated that I doubt it will bother me to have it covered/insulated. However, I don't know what my contractor has in mind - possibly just a sheet metal sleeve - that's one of the things we need to discuss. I love the idea of building a cabinet around it, but I'm not sure what I could store that close to a heat source. As for the vanity, I am considering white - I just wasn't sure how white would look against all that white tile. I haven't decided what color to paint the walls yet because I haven't decided on the mosaic accent, but it will likely have just about any blue or green imaginable in it so painting the vanity to match/coordinate should be a snap. There's just something I love about dark wood, though, and I wouldn't hesitate to use it if I didn't think it looked funny with the floor. I haven't ordered the floor tile, so I'm not married to the wood-look porcelain, but I also haven't seen any other floor tiles that really grab me. If you have any better suggestions for floor tiles that would coordinate with white subways, let me know!

You need drawer and shelf organizers and baskets. You have plenty of storage already for 2 people, and a very nice bathroom!! Do a pretty runner on the floor that goes the width of the vanity instead of the two mats. You can put extra padding under it. I have a plastic container with my “day” face products and one with my “night” face products. I grab the container out, do my thing, then stash it back away. I decant my face cleanser and hand soap in pretty pump decanters that stay on the counter. Toothpaste and toothbrush in a tall tumbler that matches the decanters. Makeup is organized in drawers. Cotton balls, q tips, hair styling tools and products etc in drawer and shelf organizers. If the lower doors open to cavernous spaces, invest in a system that is easy to pull out and use, which will help you stay organized. I try to keep my products grouped in containers by use, which helps keep the drawers and shelves clean. Containers get washed as needed, but it’s much easier than removing a whole shelf of stuff. I am RUTHLESS about throwing out products I don’t use often.

I'd consider baskets attached to the inside of the door. (Elfa back of door storage.) It will be easy to stand right in front of the basket when the door is open and see what you are reaching for in a hanging bin instead of diving to the back of a shelf.

We have these in many different sizes for what we use as an "inside the door" medicine cabinet/linen closet. Some are small enough for bottles of pills, vitamins, creams to line up on without getting lost. Others hold extra shampoo, travel cosmetic bags, hair dryer.

Figure out the depth these would take up when the doors are close. Then you can organize in the open space that is left in the closet with a way to stack towel and store toilet paper and other big items.

IMO we need to know the size of the space and also pics from further back showing the whole space . it looks like the door hits the toilet so IMO no door for sure and some nice shelving left open so towels stacked, pretty jars filled with bath salts and scrubbies and some solid baskets for other stuff needing storage . IMO usually to much stuff stored in bathrooms that really do not need to be there . I need to see the whole space please Post the pics here in comment s.

Wow! What an awkward space! I would just use it for stacking towels. Cant you put all of that other stuff under the sink?

Other than than , put up some shelves.

I have a bathroom closet like that. I have some of those freestanding shelves, like these:

VARIERA shelf insert, white, 125/8x51/8x61/4" - IKEA

I also have things in bins with lids, so they can be stacked. I label them. And I have some back of door storage. It's not elegant or worthy of a picture, because it's my daughter's bathroom. But it uses the space better than you're using yours. I do have a separate, equally awkward space for toilet paper and cleaning supplies, but no undersink storage.

Bins make it much easier to grab stuff in the back, because you just pull out of the front bin and then the back bin, rather than moving many bottles of shampoo, hair spray, and other stuff. You can organize bins by family member or type of item.
