What to do with my stairway wall

I need help with what to do on my stairway wall. The wall is 11' high from the floor of the main level to the ceiling, from the bottom of the stairs it's close to 20'. The bad spots with the tape will be repaired amd the wall is being painted a lighter colour . I had started out thinking I would do a random pattern of squares with trim on the wall, painted the same colour. I am worried that will become outdated. I then transitioned to the two large pieces of art in the photo but now I'm thinking that will look ok from the living room but still leaves so much empty wall below. My contractor suggested simple straight floor to ceiling lines of trim in the top photo, which I like but not sure about 20' lines. Should I do a square pattern like the other photo on the whole wall? Do I do wainscotting part way and the artwork on the top of the wall. Help!
