Basement Dehumidifier Recommendations & Questions
Comments (3)There are some threads at GW on dehumidifier brands. A central dehumidifier would be quietest, as it's part of the central HVAC system, which is usually in a separate room. However, the cost will be five-10 times that of a stand-alone unit. FWIW, I've always used basic stand-alone models from Woods. The EPA says 30-50%RH; CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.) says below 60%; Woods recommends 50%RH. Comments (5)I painted my basement stairs with an exterior porch paint from Sherwin Williams- it is extremely durable and scrubbable. Then I glued carpet treads to each one with construction adhesive. This gave me the durability and easy to clean properties of paint with the sure-footedness and traction of carpet. I did the same thing on an outdoor porch stairway and three years of rain and snow later they still look as good as the day I did them. I am actually amazed at how well they are holding up. I did measure and place each tread very carefully so they would look nice. I am very happy with my results....See Moreany recommend about basement cinder block waterproofing sealer?

Comments (3)I like an 'entry level' cork floating floor in a work out area (utilitarian pattern). You can seal the floating cork floor if you want. But it doesn't need it. Cork dimples (dents that pop out with heat) when heavy objects are placed on them for long periods of time (like a king sized bed, etc). An area rug underneath the workout bike will prevent the dimples from happening. You can use floating cork flooring throughout the basement area. It *should cost the same as a higher-priced laminate ($3/sf). It can do everything a carpet can do...and more. If cork floating floors (click-together flooring) interests you: www.icorkfloor.com Order some samples from Anne. If it is something you are going to work with, ask the builder to create a concrete slab that is ready for a floating laminate floor. That's all the prep you will need....See MoreRelated Professionals
