Okay so I started painting my island....should I go 'bluer'?
Comments (48)Thanks for the votes of confidence. I really thought I'd be starting a riot. So many people have told me just to leave it alone, it's fine, classic white kitchen, etc. But it's just never felt right. Now I'm excited about it! The rugs were just cheapies from Kirklands. So not worth heart failure, Amy! Believe me, paint would be the most mild thing that has ever been on them. Dog slobber, muddy paws, hair, pancake batter drips, grease splatters, various sundry spilled drinks, etc. all adorn those rugs. The beauty of the pattern is that they show nothing, and they're wool, so they've so far been indestructable. Just to set everyone's mind at ease, the pic of the paint tray was at the very, very end of the project, and there was only a few drops left in the deepest part of the paint well. No rug was harmed in the filming of this project. :)...See MoreWhere should I move my kitchen to?
Comments (14)Yes! I knew you'uns would pull through with some new thoughts! eam and jillius: now why didn't I think of that?! scone and herb-(you two sound great together,mmmm..) good thoughts on improvements without changing the footprint. We will put some thought into all of your suggestions. jillius,I agree with you on the messing up of the room size scales. (you're the one who brought that to my attention originally, thank you!) The living room is a good size and I've never considered it too small, but once it was next to a room twice it's size, I imagine it would start to seem cramped by comparison. Yes the addition is a full two stories. I like your creative eye, especially with regards to the nice size living room. However, I don't think I want the kitchen clear at the back of the house like that. That part of the house really feels cut off from the front, the road, visitors, delivery people, etc. It would be a large and luxurious kitchen/dining room for sure! benj-yes the main road runs north and south just off the side of the layout picture. Not as many people use it as I would like, probably because it looks out by itself, isolated from the larger part of the house. I think some different landscaping choices would help put emphasis there, but that's in the future. It is the first door you see when you pull in. lavender- I love how you put plant recommendations in every suggestion! Helps visualize, and I love to garden. I haven't had a chance to do much since we moved here, but I have plans!;)......on to the topic at hand, I love your suggestion. That really helps get all the living space in the front of the house, which is more or less my object. The back just feels dark and closed off. Every morning while I fix breakfast, the living and dining room are flooded with light, and my poor kitchen has artificial lights on:(( I hate to give up that bedroom, and I'm not sure we would partition the back like that, but the living, dining and kitchen layout are perfect! Even solves (or simplifies at least) the roofline problem. The kitchen could be closed off even more from the dining if we wanted to. I debated whether to even try posting again. We've talked over what I thought was every possibility and I figured we had exhausted the options. Not so! Lots of food for thought here, thanks sooo much everyone. All your ideas will be discussed and considered, and considered and discussed!...See MoreShould I move my kitchen?
Comments (12)I would flip the kitchen/dining spaces. The tight space will make for a cozy dining room. A little too cozy for a dining room, IMO. I can't determine for sure how wide the current kitchen is but guesstimating that it's something around 10' wide. I would move the kitchen to the family room, leave the dining room where it is and use the old kitchen for a mudroom/ storage room/ laundry/ pantry/ utility/ freezer/ dog wash room... Or use the dining room for the kitchen, family room for dining, old kitchen for mudroom. The proposal to use part of the garage for a mudroom involves major work, removing an exterior supporting wall and creating footings/ foundation to expand. Expensive. As well as compromising the garage in that a car will never fit in there. Maybe not a factor for OP but will be a huge factor for most prospective buyers....See Moreshould I move my fridge and make a baking section?
Comments (1)I would us the cabinets under the microwave for a baking area. Putting a box around the refrigerator would finish off your kitchen very nicely. The area by the fridge has too many cons working against it. - the area created wouldn't be wide enough for me. - it would put the fridge right in front of the island making more of a pinch point - isn't very close to the sink. - puts up a wall in what looks to be an otherwise open floor plan. would a wall make sense with the rest of the floor plan?...See MoreRelated Professionals
