Comments (22)Hi all! Another MIA checking inÂand hoping that everyone is doing great! I havenÂt been here since my FIL died in late June, as I came down with a "C Diff" infection the night after his funeral. Rog found me unconscious on the bathroom floor and took me to the ER, and I really donÂt remember anything about that night or July 4th. I was in for 3 days, and was deathly sick for the next 2 weeks. (I did lose 23 pounds during this time, thoughÂnasty way to do it!) IÂm OK at this point, but everyoneÂseriouslyÂthe CDC in Atlanta has issued warnings that this could be an epidemic, and the mortality rate has doubled. Since I donÂt want to squick anyone out, please do a google on "C Diff", and remember to wash your hands, and this is very contagious. The next thing that has went on with me is that not only was I praying for Demerol or death while I was in the hospital, I have found that I am a diabetic. Great. Just screaming great. My sugar level was 453 when I went to the ER. (OKÂwellÂI was on prednisone during this time b/c I ended up in the ER the night FIL died with a horrible rash all over my behind and legs, and come to find out it was a reaction that I had to a spider bite a week prior. I was diagnosed with Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) which normally occurs in young boys (yes, I laugh at f@rt jokes, maybe this is payback!) and steroids are the usual treatment for it. It can be serious, and lead to kidney problems, but the chances are small.) So, between the stress (GAD!), the steroids, the ridiculously bad eating habits IÂve developed, IÂm not surprised that my sugar was that high. I didnÂt have any of the usual signs, i.e. excessive thrist, excessive urination, etc but here I am. I am following drÂs orders, but man! I want some sweet iced tea!! AndÂI had to drop out of school for the time being. Which just frustrates me to no end, but whaddya do? When it rains, it pours! So, that it why I havenÂt been here, or anywhere else for that matter. Things are slowly getting back to normal, and things will be good once again. RaeanneÂwhat auction? I wish I was there, IÂd love to call it for you! SuzanneÂI love that pic! WeÂre going to try to grow garlic this fall, so any advice is appreciated! BJÂhugs, my sister! Still busy as ever, I see! DeeÂnew car? What kind? Has anyone heard from Amy or John? Has Patti posted lately? Hope all is well with everyone! Love and hugs, Maddie...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 7/7/2024
Comments (20)Funky that's a bummer to delay your vacation, but I hope it ends up being much more relaxing this way. Last week was a mixed success from an exercise standpoint and this week is starting out the same. I didn't lift weights as much as I wanted last week, but added in an extra sunset hike with a bunch of ladies on Friday night. Saturday I pushed myself to an extra long swim. Unfortunately this seemed to be too much for me and I ended up being exhausted the rest of the day on Saturday. Utterly exhausted. I felt a little better on Sunday. I ended up skipping my workout Monday morning and I haven't done that in quite a while. I'm back on track as of yesterday with swimming, lifting, and running. Still doing intermittent fasting. Really pleased with success in dropping some winter / grief weight. I'm fitting into my smaller pant size again. I find fasting to be easier in the summer when I can find things to keep me busy, especially outside. I've been craving veggies but have also been feeling worn out and not enthused about cooking. I need to get back into the swing of things. I think I also need to get back to getting massages regularly. My massage therapist canceled an appointment last year and I never rescheduled after a crazy fall and winter. I'm have a lot of body aches and muscle pain lately. It can be challenging to fit in with a busy work schedule, but I really should see if I can make it happen. Hopefully she's still doing massage work....See MoreIt's August 2024. How is Your Build Going?
Comments (43)I've been absent a while, tied up with house details and work, and it's exciting to see what stage everyone is at! We got our CO yesterday! Wheee!!! Almost 2 years to the day that they started finishing the road to the site, and about 20 months from foundation. Still enough stuff left to do that we're not quite moving in for another couple of weeks. Main stair rail still needs sanding and finishing, water filtration system needs to be installed. Some cabinetry still going in and last painting being done. Landscape work is still going on and probably will be for a while. The fire pit is going in soon. Dog fencing should go up in a couple of weeks, and tar and chip parking area. We put down a cover crop of annual rye, and now it's about time to plant a good seed mix, which will be mostly native, I hope. Anyone know a good source for a final walk-through checklist? I want to make sure i test every system and appliance, get all the instructions, etc., and i'm sure I'll forget something. And now for the progress pics: Mudroom cabinets and bench (no handles yet): Great room, from the kitchen--film is off the windows! Floors are finished! (had to be redone in this room b/c they left brush marks the first time...) Chandelier is up, but no dinner table. Missing a built-in cab here as well, coming soon. Fireplace. Like all the other stone, this came from the site. Reclaimed white oak for the mantel. One of my favorite features -- corner windows in the stairwell. (The walls are not actually gray.) Mudroom with dog grooming tub and Speed Queen: A bedroom: Another bedroom, 2nd bed still to be assembled. The shade is down in this pic--it blocks the glare but you can still see through it. Not a great pic of the kitchen. I'll try to take some more: I'll get some updated exterior pics to post later this week, too. It's getting close!...See More2024, week 1 October
Comments (25)Glenda, I just looked that up--Walnut Woods. Pretty sure I looked at a house online that was for sale on your street. I'll have to take my little grandson there next year. He's only 4 months old now. We take our school to Orr because it's close. Larry, it's great that your family is appreciating all the homegrown food! And it's great that you grow it for them. We got up early to feed the animals at both homes and then got to work outdoors. I was able to put down cardboard in an area in the native garden that I want to be more of a perennial garden for native plants. But, left a small spot for the gaillardia and poppies (I know they're not native). I left about a 10' x 8' spot for them. Once the cardboard was down, I hauled woodchips to the put on top of the cardboard. I pushed through although I didn't feel like doing that chore at all. Tom was going to help but started working on an antique bed that has been in the shop for years. It was really dirty and needs some work. He offered to help me, but I'm thrilled he's working on that bed. I want to put it in Ethan's room. There's a dresser and a washstand that goes with it, but those items need a lot more work. He already has the bed about ready. Here's a story about that furniture (skip ahead now if that is boring to you. I should really write all of this down in a journal instead of a gardening forum.) About 27 years ago we lived in Tom's hometown. A doctor (from another country) had a practice there as well as a factory that made a certain medical thing). He asked me to clean a rent house that he had. He had brought over young men from his home country to work in the factory, but they decided to go home. I walked in and I kid you not, there were millions of roaches all over the house. There was no way to clean it. I told him that he needed to spray, and he said to clean around the bugs. I'm not sure if he had actually looked at the house, but there was not an empty, roach-free spot to even wipe a cloth or sponge, If you had knocked them off, more would be immediately there. Nope. Not doing that. Apparently, they young men who went back to their country, left food in the freezer/refrigerator/pantry. Doctor shut of the electricity because no one was living there, and he was cheap about certain things. So, he finally had it sprayed. And I cleaned. Nasty work and I wasn't paid near enough. This house had been AMAZING at one time. I couldn't get over the details and just how lovely it truly was. It was 3 stories......the staircase--wow! But, he had made it into apartments on each level with a kitchen. When he purchased the house, it came with some of the original furniture including that antique bed. I loved the bed and asked if I could buy it. He gave it to me because he saw it as junk. He understandably had no appreciation of American antique furniture. Honestly, we took the dresser and washstand without asking too. And one of those wooden sewing stands that hold thread and all. I knew he thought it was all junk and it was shameful how much he paid me. I had agreed to the price before seeing the house and the cockroaches. Anyway...that's the story of the bed. We used it two houses ago in our room. I did some research on it and it was probably made in the 1920's. This doctor was a piece of work. He asked us to take the nasty sheets home to wash. Nope. Not taking anything like that into my home or washing machine. So, we threw them in Tom's truck and planned on taking them to a laundromat. But it rained on them and they got all nasty (nastier) so we tossed them. The doctor got SO mad that we threw them away. He was probably in his 60's and said he had those sheets since he residency. Yeah, but they have roach eggs on them and they got rained on. And just gross.. He got over it and asked us to watch their little dog while they went back to their home country for a bit. Little dog ate part of our bathroom door. LOL I watered a few things and am about to shower. We're going to stay with our baby for a bit this late afternoon. I had a thought about what I would do if I could go back in time regarding the garden. But that is a discussion for another time. I wasted all my time talking about the antique bed....See MoreRelated Professionals
