Pruning Question

Hi,

I have this massive tree shoot (?) that looks like it should be removed. It's basically growing out of the ground and is similar to another tree trunk, but seems to be causing problems in the tree. It is unfortunately massive where it originates near the ground. What should i do about this? Also, this tree is growing too close to another tree and too close to the fence. How should i approach pruning this tree in general?

Do you know what the trees are?

The extra stem looks as if it's growing from the root stock. Cut it off. Fwiw I don't think the trees are too close together or too close to the fence. But that does depend on the species and its potential mature height. You might limb them up a bit to clear the fence.

Could they be Pawpaws? I've never seen one in the flesh.

I think it is a type of cherry tree. Unsure what type of cherry tree though. It is definitely growing from the root, but how should i cut if off (like what is the proper technique)? It is huge and i don't know if i can get a clipper that is big enough for that stem.

I would snip the middle flsuh and the side branching down to the 1st bud. IME, more branching, more energy spent . So if you get 4 new branches out of the 2 side branching (vs 2 if you cut it off) then 4 stems use more energy, slightly smaller blooms, a bit less bloom heavy... But LL will weep down, especially in sustained heavy rains. they remain vert until that 1st heavy rain where it water soaks the head ... When my LL were younger, I have put a stake and roped and it has kept the entire thing vert for the entire season.

HB and Christopher CNC: Thanks so much for your response and confirmation that they will come back. My neighbor wasn’t sure after he saw them and thought we might need to remove them. So glad that’s not the case! nicholsworth: The landscaper recommended doing a hard prune because they were getting leggy and completely swallowed the fence (this was all here when we bought the house and I don’t really like the fence sections, but that area is low on the to-do list). Also, although there is a good amount of space around most of the bushes, it’s hard to tell from the picture angle but the first one was closing in on the generator area and making it tricky to mow the area between the two (they are prickly!). And finally, they were infringing on our neighbor’s yard and killing a good amount of their grass (we’re reseeding it for them), so wanted to give them their yard back! Edited to Add: I did not know that they are invasive, but learned about it while looking online regarding this issue. Are there special concerns/things we should do differently because of that label? Thanks!

Sweetbay magnolia natural growth habit is more of a bush that a tree, I have seen many of them in the woodlands of eastern North Carolina. As said let them sort things out and in a couple of years after reading on Sweet bays, prune them as necessary.

First, cut a major portion of the branches off the root stock.

Then, using a hand saw, cut the rootstock trunk off about 2 ft above the ground.

Cutting toward the trunk of the good tree. Cut through the rootstock trunk, at ground level, almost all the way through, careful not to cut into the good trunk.

Then just work carefully with the saw to finish detaching it from its base without cutting into the cambium of the good tree.

If it re-sprouts, pinch off any new growth.

The bark and leaves do not resemble any cherry I've met. Does it flower? Does it produce fruit?
