Our LR is 20 x 30 or 35, and we have two area rugs, along with two seating areas. Our sofa floats in the middle of the room, and we have a rug there where our FP is also. Behind the sofa we have a round persian. We really like having two rugs. It adds more interest to the room.

Thanks again everyone for all the helpful tips! I'll stay away from Jute for sure now even though I like the look of it. Seagrass could work well for the decor but I'm concerned about one spot ruining the whole thing (pet) where a pattern can hide things better. Extra thanks for the mention of Joss & Main - their search engine for rugs is much better than all the others and prices seem good but sometimes better on Overstock and other places. Most places make you work very hard to see a size/price combo when all you want to see is the biggest sizes.

My living room is 17 1/2 x 15 1/2 I don't find it too large for a single seating area. I guess it depends on how you lay out the furniture. Where your TV is we have a fireplace with book shelves. The TV is in the book shelves with 2 chairs flanking the fireplace. I have my couch where you have your love seat and my love seat where you have you couch. Maybe switch your love seat and couch. This would push back the room and fill up the empty space.

I think this may be a Coco Chanel moment “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off.” I love your space, but there is a lot of large scale furniture. I would remove the teachers chair and one of the single chairs. Place the remaining large chair at the empty end of the sectional sofa. This is now your conversation pit I would move the piano back where you originally had it and bring in two dining room chairs and place them by the corner windows across from the piano. This is now the music area. I played organ when I was young and at least twice a week my dad would suggest that he and my mom have their coffee in the living room while I played organ for them. I came home every day from school and immediately went to practice, never knowing if this would be a night where mom and dad would want to hear what I have been working on. It was a huge incentive for me to do well. I see your space being able to provide that exclusive attention that was so important to me when I was young.
