An Olympics question

Does someone know why the Olympic shooting events are men, women, and mixed? There are equestrian events where men and women, and mares and geldings for that matter, compete with one another. I used a firearm once in my life, in camp, so I have no idea. The shooting events seem to be the same. Where does a gender advantage or difference lie? I did read today that there is a performance improvement among men for trap (or is it skeet?) where the firearm has to be lifted and fired to hit a moving object. Does anyone have experience in this arena?
