Comments (10)The painters and I had a bit of a communication problem - they are Guatemalan and I no habla espanol too good :-(( Their crew leader, who spoke great English, was only there first thing in the morning to give the day's instructions and while we talked about being careful with the plantings, I doubt that was on their primary agenda. To be honest, my garden would provide a challenge to any housepainter regardless of delicacy - it is just too fully planted. Considering what the damage could have been, nothing was permanently disabled - needing some remedial pruning perhaps and set back a bit, but that's about it. The eucryphia will recover with a bit of trimming and the Pittosporum 'Garnettii' next to it looks like it came through unscathed. The Hebe 'Amy' referred to in another post took a bit of a beating but she was due for a good haircut anyway. The paint job looks stunning, btw :-)...See MorePDX Eucryphia blooms also
Comments (1)Very nice Larry. I wish this and many more Southern Hemisphere trees and woody shrubs were much more commonly sold in the retail market in the PNW. From what I can see It is a long way off, at least in the Seattle area. Beautiful. -Brian...See MoreHPSO fall sale and Eucryphia glutinosa f. 'Plena'
Comments (8)Your glutinosa (and other Chilean varieties) are rated more tender than my plants that are hybrids or purely Tasmanian/Australian (intermedia, lucida, etc.) Most literature says to protect them from strong winds, but I get east winds here and only notice occasional tiny branchlet breakage, no individual leaf damage. Leaves turned brown by low temps fall off in spring, are replaced readily by May. If your two proposed locations are about equally cold in the winter, go with the mid-morning...late afternoon one with wind exposure, that is where mine are. You may want to mulch and cover up your plant if it is very small for the first winter if temps go below 15. I put a sprinkler under my eucryphias every two weeks or so during hot summer stretches....See MoreRelated Professionals
