What paint color and finish for these stair railings?

What’s the most classic paint color for stair railings like these (photo attached)? The painter recommends gloss black oil paint. Should I consider something softer than true black (for instance, off-black or charcoal or bronze) and what finish (semi-gloss)? The stairs will remain essentially the same or possibly be stained Minwax Provincial.

I think you could to black which is classic, or dark bronze metallic which is also classic but may highlight any flaws in the preexisting finish, but I don't think anything gray would work.

I would do black. As to sheen, that is up to you. Some (apparently your contractor does), like a high glass enamel. I would prefer semi gloss enamel, myself, and I have a few neighbors that use a lot of black, and they prefer satin. Its all individual taste. Which sheen do you like?

I would use at least one of the trim white colors. BM Simply White is a warm white, so I might be inclined to use that if you feel the Ultra White is too harsh.

I have used BM for years and experimented with different finishes. I do not like semi-gloss except for exterior doors. The trim finish I have found that works best for my tastes and for easy clean up is satin. Make sure that whoever is doing the work properly preps and removes the previous finish.

Leave te railing as is staining it will be abig job as all the finish on there now will have to be removed then all snaded to barewood before staining seems like a big job for no purpose . I see nice looking flooring so not sure the reason for the refinish , Maple yellows with age some finishes can slow that down but not stop it. MY opinion inless the floors are in bad shape leave them save the money for something else .

I would probably use satin or semi. Satin especially if in a bronze finish.
