Sweat bee (I think) problem

We live on a farm in rural Kansas. We like to eat outside on our patio a lot and like to entertain there, as well. In the last week we've gotten invaded with what I think I sweat bees, although there seems to be no correlation to us being sweaty.

How do I make them go away, at least while we're eating? I really don't want to invite guests over and say, "But make sure you put on insect repellent," but they are a REAL NUISANCE while eating.

I've read that they like rotting wood. I don't know of any rotting wood on the property (except maybe mulch in my flower beds), although the outbuildings are old, so it's always possible.
