I have made many outdoor things, my gnomes come to mind. I paint them with acrylic paint and spray them with an acrylic clear sealer that lasts for several years! BUT I also take them in for the winter to keep them from the thaw/freeze factor. Ceramic painted objects will NOT last too many years exposed to the winter elements. I found that out the hard way. After several years they may have to be repainted or just touched up. Because of the sealer I usually wash them with warm soapy water, wipe them down with plain alcohol (to remove some of the spray on sealer) and repaint! I don't use varnish or Thompsons waterseal. I am afraid I would not be able to get it off with alcohol if I wanted to repaint. What do you think? Rosie

Usually when eggs are painted the insides are blown out. You make 1 small hole & then on other side little larger hole & blow insides out, seems like you break the yolk 1st!WASH well or they will smell! Suppose you could fill it with something so it wouldn't break but plaster of Paris would break & concrete would be awfully hard to get in that little hole so maybe a resin??? Then any sealant would work. My painted objects usually get Krylon Clear sprayed on them. I haven't painted any eggs.

That is an adorable turtle! As for the epoxy, it's about the toughest substance out there. I have trouble believing it couldn't go on anything. Unfortunately, I have no real experience with it in the application you're suggesting. If you don't get an answer, maybe try fashioning up something quick and cheap that you wouldn't mind getting ruined (i.e., NOT that adorable turtle), give it a shot and see how it turns out.

The first rule of finishing is to run a trial, start-to-finish, on a piece of "scrap" before you touch the final project. Avoid the "ready, fire, aim" approach, AKA, "What do I do now?" Polyurethane has its own set of adhesion issues, exacerbated by a foundation of wax. It will peel off like a bad sunburn. Oil-based poly is going to significantly yellow or amber your look, even if it did stick. Waterborne poly, which is mostly acrylic with poly thrown in for marketing purposes, will give a cooler, sometimes bluish, tint that would not affect the white liming as much. But it won't stick either. In addition, a wax finish is about as close to no finish at as as you can get. Virtually no resistance to water, soiling, cleanability, etc. -- most of the things you apply finish for in the first place (the remaining one being beautification, the one thing you did achieve.). You might have achieved the same look by using a white-wash / pickled oak / etc. (names dependent upon mfr.) stain followed by a KCMA certified, low-gloss w/b acrylic. I add this in case anyone in the future reads this.
