Help? My Christmas cactus is dying...
Comments (14)I just noticed you have this thread going on the houseplants forum, too....looks like you are getting the same responses over there. It is usually not necessary to repot plants, but if you are experiencing problems, one of the suspects is bad soil...it could be spoiled. If you can get your hands on some Pro-Mix, that is one of the best soils on the market. Plastic pots can sometimes pose problems...they trap the moisture for a longer period of time than the clay/terra cotta pots do. Depending on how often you are watering (shouldn't be on an exact schedule), it might not be dry enough before you are watering again. I would switch to a terra cotta pot, but that is up to you. Yes, each segment (this should be fairly obvious) will form a new plant. I place mine (the bottom end) in little plastic pots with good soil and keep them damp-moist, but not wet. Prop the segments up with little rocks or something to keep them stable during this process. I keep mine in an east window so they don't get any hot afternoon sun. Good luck!...See MoreIs my Christmas Cactus Dying? HELP
Comments (5)hi: that is really sad... i'm so sorry. I don't grow CC in Canada but I do have a couple I grow in Brisbane, Australia ... so all I can tell you is what I've seen with CC ... first of all Brisbane is very humid ... I think that is important ..so they need less water with higher humidity. I'm not sure what that will mean to you growing in your conditions. In Brisbane CC can not be treated as a cactus or even a normal succulent ... it does want water...some succulents are happier very, very dry and some do want water. CC wants water in a well draining mix .... It also wants sun ... maybe not strong, hot Brisbane summer sun full time but it does want sun. When it is getting less sun and less heat i'd give it less water ... and I would not let it sit in water ...the soil needs to be draining well ...as you already have success with normal succulents I think you're ready to go. With this piece ... soak it ... re pot it .... and put it in bright light but not hot sun for now...and also ... absolutely ask your siblings for another piece of this wonderful heirloom ... :) Good luck!!! :)...See MoreChristmas Cactus DYING! Comments (16)Jocelyn, that's why I asked about soaking. What you did is exactly what I have done for my TCs. Then one day someone described how they soaked their plant and I realized that I wasn't doing what was suggested. Do try to removed most all of the soil from the roots of your plant before repotting. If it is hard, like asked above, it will still interfere with getting water to the roots. Be patient and soak and swish with warm/tepid water. Sometimes a bamboo skewer will help break up the hard soil without ripping off all the roots. Your plant will thank you. Good luck! Come back with any more questions and do let us see your plant after you finish. We love a success story!...See MoreNeed help with cactus dying
Comments (3)That is two kinds of cacti. One is grafted on top of the other. The top one needs the lower one because the top one has no chlorophyll. It can't photosynthesize. Unfortunately the bottom cactus is dead. Unless you try grafting the top cactus on to a new rootstock you won't be able to save it....See MoreRelated Professionals
