Design Dilemma Bathrooms

how much space between medicine cabinet and wall?

Help! I’m redoing my small bathroom. My contractor says the vanity will be 38in wide. It will be against a wall on the right. How much clearance will I need between the a medicine cabinet and the wall? Could I put to narrow cabinets 15x30in together, doors opening away from each other and lights above? Or can I put a 22x34 cabinet with lights on either side? I’m thing of using The kohler Vedera medicine cabinets?

I don't think you want two cabinets with the "seam" in the middle centered over the sink, and your face when you look in the mirror.

The sink will not be centered. It will be towards the right. But I get what ur saying. https://www.kohler.com/en/product

Thanks also for the advice about the handles. With kids, I can just imagine the dents! Adults are always perfect, right?? I also appreciate the list of tips, some of which I have also gleaned from this wonderful site, including the big single sink and induction. Now I also have the pegboard idea from your photos. Mine might be higher than average. I'm 5'7" so I have a decent reach. I absolutely would not allow the microwave to be placed over the stove. We have it over the counter and it's just right. If you are worried about heighth, you might consider a cabinet right on the counter. Our kitchen designer put one on the end of a line of cabinets. The bottom is a shallow drawer which I have rolled up placemats in. Since it doesn't need to be opened very often, there's just enough counter space to place bowls, plates, etc that I'm taking out of the cabinet. I really like having the plates and serving dishes within easy reach. The cabinet is right beside the doorway to the dining room. Glasses and coffee cups are next to the frig on the other end but in upper cabinets. Due to 9' ceilings, our upper shelves require a step stool so seldom used items are up there.

Sconces mounted on mirrors can look good, but I'm not sure that mounting a sconce on a wide wooden surface in the middle of the mirror is a good choice -- esthetically or practically -- particularly with that nice, formal cabinetry. Why don't you simply dispense with the wood and mount the sconce directly on the mirror? I have a pair of sconces mounted on a 5-1/2' wide mirror in my powder room. I also get better light distribution because the light at the rear of the sconce reflects off the mirror.

Thanks all. I guess I'm not quite ready yet, am I? Naturally, the 32" and 36" are in two different lines so I can't mix them, although I think one can be custom sized (or I could keep looking). If I do a custom size order, I can just go ahead and fill the wall. And...there are different depths. Would it be weird to have the one (ones?) in the middle be extra deep, breakfront style? I'd like the extra depth but I have a light switch to consider. :) It's very possible that they will be moved at some point. I've been told that I have a bad habit of rearranging furniture (and then telling the spouse to redo all the media hookups heh heh). Nosocc, I tried to make IKEA work for me. I really did! But it would have to be painted and I have too many unfinished projects. (I actually kinda enjoy the assembly part.) The wood species/colors on Billy just don't work with what we have. Psst, isn't that Billy and not Hemnes? See? I've been looking! The styling on Hemnes is too contemporary? Modern? Current? Pottery Barnish? Anyway, not neutral (like Billy) enough to slip in to my used furniture mix.

If I were to use the 22x 34 in medicine cabinet, would I have enough space on either side for narrow lighting?

There are some light fixtures that are 4" wide, so the answer is just barely. Ask the contractor if they can fit the junction boxes in. This will depend on stud placement as well. Any chance you can find a medicine cabinet you like that is 20" wide? This would give you a little bit more room. I prefer a medicine cabinet with sconces on either side over any other configuration, so if I were you I would really try to make it work for the best functionality.

Get one of the medicine cabinets with built in lights. I don't remember if it was Kohler or Robern. I used one in a kids bathroom I did a few years ago. Wanted a big medicine cabinet for storage, but had no room for light fixtures. I also had 2 recessed light in the ceiling and 2 over the tub/shower area. Plenty of light. The medicine cabinet lights also dimmed and worked as a night light.

I have linear fixtures in two bathrooms that are an inch or inch and a quarter in width.

You can install a medicine cabinet above the sink either surface mounted or recessed between the studs.

Or you can place a medicine cabinet in the side wall of the bathroom. These cabinets are designed to fit between standard spacing studs, & then simply install a decorative mirror over the sink.

Here is the cabinet line I used. I would go with the 29.5 W x 40 H. Most people get medicine cabinets and mirrors that are too short. They have other sizes.

I think mine was the 30 W x 40 H.

You also need to pay attention to the faucet height. I ended up having to change the first faucet I ordered to a side handle one, so the cabinet door could clear the faucet.
