I truly have not had anything of what I would call real rain. There has been just enough to keep the grass green, kind of. I need to get the kids back. They would do anything to play with the hose.
I will be weeding this week. Because of growing in pots, I cannot pull them out as I lose too much dirt. So, I try to give them a cut at the roots. Last year I started a program where I try to keep them from re-seeding. It has been a win win for me as I had coleus and some small daisy going ramped and this year not too bad.
I also came up with this idea where I would get Purslane to seed some of the areas where weeds grow on the ground cover. They have some pretty flowers and stay low. I got 11 different colors of flowers last year and let them do their thing. One Purslane can make over
55,000 seeds in a season,
times 11 plants
equaled to 1 free plant.
So, weeding and watering are on my agenda with a little repotting. I have to make room for 8 caladiums, and I am out of room. The struggle is real so I will have breakfast first.
The hostas are going good and I am getting photos as summer can be hard. Hint.
I guess it helps to push the go buttons.

6 months agolast modified: 6 months agoIt has been hot and lots of humidity. Decent amount of rain, so barely any watering. I need to weed but really have hard time weeding in this heat.
Got some pictures at sunset. Plenty of mosquitoes, chipmunks and slugs. Either chipmunks or rabbits chewing off peppers.
Hubby got new bird feeder, now we have more wars with furry rats.

Old_dirt, hubby bought me inexpensive watch that calculates my steps, I walk 5-6 miles daily in my garden/ house alone ...sheesh. I hear you on taking a break. Gary, you were right, water has subsided significantly. Still there but at least garden beds are clearing. Sandy, I am looking for salvias too, gotta find Lowes to see any sales. Otherwise I will need to get some seeds and grow a batch. My spring look needs an improvement. Are daylilies worth growing? How long that bloom lasts? Hostas are in decline, bug damage has taken its toll, lack of rain and lack of energy! Well that’s the garden cycle it seems, for hostas anyway. My Liberty looked so burned in the sun bed that I had Bert move it for me out front where it will get sun and shade. I may have to move others or protect them with nearby taller plants. It seems my sun bed is a lot of sun. The only hostas that aren’t fried are El Niño, High Society, Nigrescens, Sting and Snow Mouse. Hanky Panky doesn’t look too bad. Gabriel’s Wing needs a new location because the small butterfly bush is just covering it up. Lots of work, and no motivation. Still living without a main bathroom vanity, cabinet and sink……long story but the guy making the vanity for us has suffered three deaths in his close family in rather quick succession and we have no idea what’s going on at this point. Bkay, I admire your desire to grow hostas. My climate is getting to be garden challenging, never mind yours for hostas. Still super dry for 6 weeks with no rain. I feel that ground level of water dropped waay down. I have heavy clay and it drains like sand. I started putting mulch down, leaves, manure and wood chip mix, anything to protect soil. Is it wrong that I covet lindalana’s new dog and nicholsworth/Ann’s wood chipper? I would love to have a place for both. 😊 Old_dirt, Lucky you to be able to catch your own fish. It’s so good when it’s fresh caught. And that it benefits your garden is even better. I was able to get my fall bulbs planted, but beyond that I got zero cleanup done. I don’t know how time goes by so fast. We got six inches of snow the other day with only half melted off so far. So it’s icy, cold, and wet out there. I had such high hopes to get more done. I also have a blanket of leaves covering the beds and lawn. But some years are surprising, so I may get out there yet. Is anyone else seeing how many people have been thrown off by (our American) Thanksgiving being later this year? I have a friend whose kids made reservations to be at her house this Thursday instead of next week, lol. Two families that didn’t check before making airline reservations. And another one whose hubby took the turkey out to thaw a week early. 6 months agoPretty much the same as others here, weeding and watering. I doubt if I'll get caught up on the weeding this year, I just concentrate on the nicest beds.
Paula - Bonus, the purslane is edible and supposedly very healthy. As kids we used to munch on it out in the garden and more than once we had it in salads.
They do come back :-)I made a new bed with about 20 Golden Tiara as a border. Less than 6 weeks ago a critter (deer I assume) made one of them and only one a snack, leaving only one small leaf. It's coming back pretty good and hopefully next year it will catch up to the others.

Lindalana, what a good hosta year you’re having. I’ve wanted Sharp Dressed Man for a while.
Old_dirt, good thing the deer stopped at one, but it would be nice if they would stick to all their natural food in the woods. But that’s an amazing recovery!
Ann, that’s a big anniversary. Congratulations! Your succulent arrangement is pretty. They’re so cute when they’re little.
Debra, I hope you’re feeling better by now. My hostas have more damage this year, too, even with Sluggo. 75 snails at one time would freak me out! Sounds like a sci-fi movie.
Like everyone else I’ve been weeding when I get up early enough to beat the heat. I can never catch up, but doing something is better than nothing. Also, lots of deadheading. One day I got out the hedge trimmers because they make quick work of cutting back the spireas.
I placed my order for bulbs. I’m planting a lot of small ones this coming fall.
My Elephant Ears in pots aren’t up yet. I dug two up and they have pointy growths. They better hurry up before it’s time to store them for winter.
I bought a new bottle of Liquid Fence deer and rabbit repellent, but it doesn’t stink like it should. Maybe it’s a dud. I sprayed anyway hoping the deer smell it.
Also got some new pruners, and they’re sticking. What’s best to use on them? I have WD40 and a silicone spray handy.
In the U.S. the price of stamps is going up again. If you still use them you have a week to stock up! I ordered some online.
Frances Williams has no desiccation this year. I’m planning on moving the daylilies and hoping that won’t affect my good luck with FW. And it didn’t come back with the green section that it had last year, so I had no Elegans reversion to separate.
