Comments (29)Pella or Marvin architect series it is a trading game for anyone. You already learned that with your gables (good choice IMO-too many gables is mcmansiony). I chose certain high quality materials over square footage. 2900 sf was more than enough for my family of 5, and I didn't want to heat and maintain huge spaces that I rarely use (I don't have any need for a bedroom suite, for instance: I would never use my bedroom for sitting on a sofa or whatever people do in their 800 sf bedrooms) but that is just me. Another thing that baffles me is the 3 car garage with cheap doors. I'd rather have a smaller garage with wood doors. But everyone has different needs and priorities. Take some of these things in to consideration as you drive around and browse Houzz. Look closely to see differences between houses that you love and houses that look similar but don't have that special something. I thought I posted this last night but I don't see it here. Another thing you never thought you cared about but makes all the difference: eave returns!! http://www.thisiscarpentry.com/2013/12/13/eave-returns-interpreting-gyhr-details/...See MoreNew modern farmhouse going up on a Ranch in South Dakota
Comments (22)We are farmers in IL and built our home a year ago. We also make almost every single meal. We put in soapstone in November and I absolutely love it. My definition of upkeep must be different. Oiling it as needed, which I haven't done for at least 2 weeks maybe 3 now, is nothing more than wiping on the oil and wiping it back off. We are definitely not careful with it. If you have cattle and you're calving in South Dakota I hope it is going better than it sounds. Even with the weather I'd move to South Dakota in a heartbeat if I could. I'm afraid my spoiled IL cows would not handle South Dakota though. Good luck on your new home!...See Moresiding options for a modern farmhouse
Comments (61)just_janni "My house is insulated concrete panels - so not really a cladding discussion. It's a simple, truthful material, but requires a crap ton of up front planning. here's another house with a simple shape but some mixed materials (some quite inexpensive but used creatively) https://www.tonic-design.com/projects/weathering-house/?portfolioCats=307" sorry, I somehow missed this post. Simple and truthful and words that are like music to my ears #thumbsup thanks for posting that house. very nice....See MoreNew construction build. Help me make this a farmhouse!
Comments (32)I'm not recommending all these various windows, just seeing how they might look. Generally, 2nd floor windows would be shorter then those on the first floor. Is there a dormer on the back side of the garage? If not, maybe flip it from the front to back. For siding, you cannot go wrong with using all lap. B&B is trendy now, but I've never seen a real farmhouse with it. The image also shows brick up higher than the foundation that was showing, so the builder would need to place the floor framing inside the foundation instead of on top....See MoreRelated Professionals
