Update Kitchen from 1950s

We're getting ready to move into a house with a kitchen that is mostly original from when the house was built in the 1950s.

Can't afford to gut it and do a total remodel right now.

Any ideas to make this more attractive until we can do the big remodel?

I was thinking of painting the cabinets. Not sure what colors, though.

The countertops are black. They're in bad shape and really need to be replaced.

Here are photos of the current kitchen (with all of our messy cleaning supplies in the way). The house has been vacant for a few years so there is tons of cleaning to be done.

Would navy cabinets and white walls work in a kitchen with black countertops? Or maybe paint the countertops?

I still love the gray trend and thought about gray cabinets with white walls.

Thanks for your great ideas!
