Your space is crying out for more lighting and someting to lift it from the heaviness of the cabinetry. You can transform this space with a new paint color. PaleDaffodil by Benjamin Moore a super soft yellow that is creamy when it goes up and if you don't have a lot of undercab lighting can brighten the space. Sassy Blue Sherwin Williams is a soft blue that gives off lightness but will make your cabinets really rock. In a gloss finish this can bounce light around the room to reflect. Cooking Apple by Farrow and Ball paints. This is a great color with dark woods. Here is an example of a medium paint with white trim. We have dark wood trim in this house and our previous. I tend to stick to more earth tone colors rather than darks. Our current living room/dining room is latte from Restoration Hardware. In the old house our dining room was a turquoise blue and it looked great with the dark trim and hardwood floor. We are also painting two bedrooms and keeping the dark wood trim. One will be a pastel blue (Atmosphere Blue from RH) and the other a very pale pink (Petal from RH) Any contrast will be enough. I would just stay away from dark brown or red shades. The trim could be a stained oak. Ours is mahogany.

The neutral colors you have currently is perfect for the room. The room is simply overstuffed with stuff. Eliminate the chair, white coffee table and random ottoman. I believe you already have a cocktail ottoman in front of your seating. Perhaps it is too small to service everyone. I have changed the pieces over your fireplace. It was too jambed before. Mount the copper disk and add some small greenery if you think it's needed. Is the TV wall unit built in? If not I would take it out and just have a wall mounted base with a wall mounted TV.
