Batik question.

I was working with some batik this afternoon and am wondering if any of you do what I was doing…looking at each piece, trying to decide which was the ’right’ side. Lots of flipping back and forth.

In the end, I don’t imagine it makes a ton of difference though, or does it?

I will share the pattern as I work it out.

Theresa, I think a true batik is the same on both sides. The dyeing process saturates the fabric. But I figure if I have a hard time distinguishing back and front, no one else will be able to, either!

I agree, Donna. If you like the look of one side more than the other, then make that the "right" side!

That iris is 'Isn't This Something' and it is a broken color pattern iris like 'Batik.' I like 'Brindled Beauty' as well, and today 'Maria Tormena' opened for me. Each flower that opens has a different pattern to the splashes. Sometimes Batik will get a flower that is all blue or all white. Same with the other broken color irises. Thanks everyone for your help! I got up and went to class today (not being a morning person this is major achievement!) and the instructor helped me figure out what I needed to buy in the way of fabric. Turns out the white fabric was bleached muslin (I found the old receipt buried in the bag, lol). So I bought 1 type of colored print and will use that and the white muslin for the quilt top and the unbleached muslin for the quilt back. All cotton with cotton thread! The down side is the only other participant had a sick child so we actually are postponing class start until next week. Although now I have the book, so I can read & look through it several times between now & next week and get more familiar with ideas,etc! Suz

Oh boy! Most of it is separated by TOT color. But then there are the flowers/large prints, novelties, holidays, 30's, Kona's, Batiks, wide backing, whites/WOW, muslin, flannels, baby, patriotic.....etc. All folded in clear containers so I can see the contents. There are various sized containers and the fabric gets moved around as it's used up except for what I consider basics and those are kept in easily accessible plastic pull out drawers. My scraps are sorted into 2 1/2", 2" and 1 1/2" strips and squares and triangles of all sizes. Since my 'crumb' marathon, I probably don't need to keep the odd sized scraps sorted, but probably will. Then there's the basket I throw stuff in to separate or put away when I get around to it, or want to feel fabric but not able to sew. TMI??? SharonG/FL

Theresa-Maybe one day in the near future I'll make the trip to Gastonia--sounds like I'll need to take a sick day for that. I've seen landscape quilts, even have a few books on the subject (that I got at the auction I mentioned before) but I'm the type of person who has to see the actual process instead of trying to read it and figure it out myself. Can't wait until you start the workshop. Everyone-You all have given me some great shortcuts that I didn't know about and some great fabric websites, I'm going to TRY read every post on this whole forum. Being a lurker here will be a great thing!

On some, I notice that there "seems" to be a right side, but on 99% of them, I can't tell the difference. I don't even bother looking any more. Just go for it, Theresa.

Sometimes you get a little dye in the white bits on the back of the fabric where the wax didn't quite soak through.

The top has been finished for a week or so but…

Like Rho said in her post, there are things going on in our lives that get in the way and slow us down. I did start quilting it and had a good bit finished but decided I didn’t like what I was doing, so there was a lot of frogging. Now working on another plan.
