Need ideas for back wall
I am struggling with the back wall of my family room. its a long narrow room which makes things more difficult. The couch needs to stay where it is. I am open to replacing the existing brown chair as is quite old. I have been looking for art work for the wall but hard as there is no furniture underneath to anchor it.

Comments (2)Installing a privacy fence along the back property line, I would think, would be a must (I like privacy, too!). The concrete slab is an odd thing to deal with. I would connect it to your deck with some stepping stones or flagstone pathway to tie it together. Perhaps on the back 1/2 you could install the lattice panels with vines growing up. That would give you a sense of privacy without feeling boxed in. Using part of that slab for storage is another idea. I never have enough outside storage. Since you want to take part of your lawn out for flower beds, I would get a plan for the entire yard before starting anything. Take your lawn and decrease its size by drawing flower beds around the outside perimeter in large curves, and try to incorporate a portion of the slab and deck areas, too. This will also help tie everything together as well as cut down on mowing. This can also increase your privacy with large shrubs/trees in your plantings. Rust resistance on both galavalume and painted come's from galvanizing. Galvalume will look glossy when first installed,then white after 12 months or less. Replaceing a section of galvalume, an addition or second bulding doesn't mis-match as much as colors. Gray has undertone color that can limit siding color. Comments (14)In our last house, the 2 tub/showers, 2 toilets, and 2 sinks were all back-to-back, and atop the lower level half-bath. The house was built in 1959, we bought it in 1996, and remodeled the baths in 2002. As far as we can tell, nothing more than minor toilet repairs and sink faucet drips were ever repaired. Wait, we know 2 bathrooms had been wallpapered over the painted drywall after 1975. So, unless you anticipate pipes freezing, I wouldn’t worry too much. This upper-midwesterner recalls her years living in Dallas, when 30-degree forcasts included warnings to let faucets drip. Doesn’t have to be stodgy, could be a fun color or even an armoire this is a little too large:
Art hung to one side, maybe two pieces stacked.

I would add a wide console/cabinet that is not too deep or high, with a big piece of artwork on the wall above it.

I’d get a collection of frames in antique white, and fill them with black and white family photos. We have a collection of both very old and very new photos, and they always draw interest in a way that artwork never does.

A large art work doesn't need furniture to anchor it as others have said. This palette would work well in your living room. It's from Society6.com and comes in very large sizes. Artists submit their designs, which then get reproduced in wall art, pillows, and more. I often suggest the site for people who are just getting interested in hanging art on their walls. There are so many subjects, styles, palettes to choose from.

These are some antique ceiling tiles that my sister found and hung on her living room wall. (Best part is they are from an old insane asylum that was torn down.)
She also has a large metal art piece in her home - a gift from her husband with the lyrics from the song they first danced to at their wedding.
Art doesn't always have to be pictures . . .
