Have You Found Any Bargains At the Grocery Lately?

    Q

    Comments (14)
The best deals I've seen lately is laundry detergent. We have two grocery stores in town, one a big box, but they do compete on soft drinks and a few other items. The smaller store often has better quality fresh fruits and vetables. Last week at Piggly Wiggly, found a special on laundry detergent: $2 for a medium size jug, normally goes for $5 to $8. Bought 2 jugs. Had been buying at Sams Club, but these prices were better cost per ounce. This week, the big box store, Pick'n Save, countered with same size detergent at $2 per jug, a different brand than the other store. Gonna buy 2 more jugs tomorrow. Won't need any more for a few months. I haven't found any bargains in tree nuts. These have been going up steadily in price since mid-last year. Two yeara ago, I could buy a 2 lbs can of mixed nuts (50% peanuts) for $10; this week the price went up to $13 when on sale, regular price: $14. Peanuts are still reasonable, but also creeping upward. Yesterday, I came home a bit miffed. I decided to pick up a loaf of rye bread to go with sliced ham. Wow, a small loaf was expensive, and then I spied a local brand, loaf same size as regular and lower cost. It had blazed in big letters on the end of the wrapper, RYE. I perchanced to read the ingredients. Guess what - no rye flour, dust, or anything. How can they get off putting RYE in bold letters on the wrapper when there is no rye in the bread??? I think it was wheat flour, a little Barley, and rye flavoring. Paahhh!

Me either, functionthenlook. The woman who sold it said she didn't use it because she is a "from scratch baker" and had no use for it. I took that to mean there may be a school of thought out there that bread made in a bread machine doesn't count as homemade. I like to bake things like pita bread, English muffins, pizza dough, dinner rolls and hamburger buns. Looking into the future, I see the machine as being a huge time saver when it comes to mixing, kneading and proofing the dough for me. My first loaf is rising and it's looking pretty good!

Nicole_ That was a great deal! I have a couple of different colors (pink, white, and pale yellow) of those tree lilies (Orienpet lilies). They will grow taller every year, and they certainly do get to 10+ feet tall after several years. Once they approach that height, it is a good idea to stake them, as they will tend to lean with the weight of the large flowers. The tallest one in this photo is just topping 8 foot They also reproduce, unless you deadhead them. I let them, and so now I have a little lily forest in one corner. What colors did you get? I would have liked a purple, but never managed to get that color on sale.

Nicole and Sueb, your bargains are impressive! Last week I bought these Ryka shoes on eBay (new in box) for $23 with free shipping. Very comfortable, and my 4-year-old grandson noticed them today and said "Cool sneakers!"

@Alisande...Nice! They're very trendy, so comfort is a big plus.

@maggie200...I buy a LOT of stuff. If it wasn't on sale I'd start to feel ripped off after awhile. 🌞

@Sueb20....Lovely...ALL of them! Great staging items..so visual.

I purchased THIS gazebo. So far we've poured cement footers. Plan on installing it this weekend, if we don't get rained out. It's for one of my rentals.

I sure did! Our town has it's own destash FB page which I check once a week. And it actually made me shed a tear.

The fb picture is gone and I can't take one of my own because my usb cord to download is broken. Story behind the chest before picture.

My ex-DIL was selling a ton of DGD's clothes, and various household furniture. Her newish husband is already part of our family, I just adore him.

She posted a picture of a lingerie chest, something I've always wanted but never got around to getting. $80 in almost perfect condition. Called her then bought it. The story behind the chest is bittersweet.

It belonged to her DH's father who passed away in upstate NY a few years ago and the two of them went to clean out his home and they shipped some of his furniture to OK, including the chest. I told her it will go directly to one of the grands because it's now a family heirloom.

When she told her DH that I bought it, she said it made him extremely happy. He and I talked about it and it took a lot for us to hold back the tears.

Here's a pic I found on Charish. Only difference is mine has a larger drawer at the bottom.

Mahogany lingerie chest. Weighs ten tons. :)

Nope no bargains, just the opposite. Was longing for a garden but live in a tiny apt. Bought several large pots for the patio, had to buy supports, soil, drainage saucers, cucumber seeds, Miracle Gro, and after reading a post from Kevin got some gypsum. The plants are around 2 feet tall and according to the seed packet will start making cucumbers in another 3 weeks or so. I plan to make pickles, and pound for pound these will probably be the most expensive pickles ever, taking into account all the little expenses. But, I'm happy. And a small toad has taken up residence on the patio, between the houseplants and cucumbers there is cover, and regular water. So the toad and I are both happy.

90% off! Got a pair of Western Chief chelsea ankle rain boots to wear in the garden for $4.59 regular price $45.00 at fleet farm a couple weeks ago. Tried on a 9 but was way to small, but was able to slip on a size 11 and when I told the cashier she said it's because they are women's boots. Oh well, I didn't mind the white checkered print on the black boots or gold buckle straps I could cut off because they have elastic on both sides. Either way they work well for what I wanted them for and kind of like the pattern. What I don't understand is the retail was $45 but a similar men's boot of the same brand runs $90, so do they figure women are smart enough not to pay $90 or men dumb enough to pay $90.

There’s a huge, wonderfully organized, fundraising, garage type sale in my town. They take over the municipal ice skating rink and FILL it with items, everything you could ever want is donated to be sold. Mostly used but a surprising number of NWT things. The proceeds go to fund cancer services. This year was the 48th year of the sale, but my first time to attend. Now that I’ve been there, to help set up and then to shop, I’ll be better prepared to shop next year. 😁

I bought a men’s Rossignol ski jacket, hoping it will fit my teenaged nephew, for $7.50. I also bought a lined, cotton, Talbot’s skirt with a scalloped hem for $2.

A local nursery has already marked their plants to 40% off. I loaded up!

I picked up these 2 huge baskets for $10 each!

Also picked up a flat of Pentas -- I don't usually buy annuals, but I couldn't resist.

But the best bargain is the neighborhood teen across the street who I pay to weed my flower beds. He is absolutely the best "hired hand" I have ever had! He doesn't graduate from HS for 3 years, so hopefully he'll be around for awhile.

Not a bargain, but still, the best purchase I have made in a long time.....the Dyson V12 Detect cordess vacuum. Do not use the "laser" head if you tend toward OCD. It will make you obsess over the dust that looks like green, glowing boulders on your floor!!

We needed a couple of bedroom mirrors at our beach cottage. I got this one on FBM for $25. It is about 30” diameter. This is a terrible pic (the seller’s photo) but someone had stripped it and never refinished it. I am going to paint it.

Then I found this one, also $25, the wood is beautiful so I won’t paint it. It will go (somewhere?) in our ”real” house. Also the seller’s pic, not mine. It’s about 20” tall.

My not bargain is this garbage can I bought for my newly renovated bath. I think it was $79. All fixtures are polished nickel and I loved that this had a rim that matched (even though not actually nickel). And I loved the fluted glass.

I also needed a new garbage can for my dressing area outside the bathroom (also newly renovated) but didn't want to spend that much for that area since garbage isn't as visible. Couldn't find anything else I liked so was going to just buy another when I noticed this one with a black rim on sale for $30. The mirror frame and cabinets in that area are black, so I think it will be perfect. That's if it ever shows up. Tracking says it was out for delivery 3 days ago. CB2 is weird. They never email me order info even though they say they do (no, it's not in my junk folder). And they use some shipping company I never heard of and things take a long time to come.

At the grocery store of all places! Over a pound of a wild caught salmon, a whole side! for $8. Chicken wings were a dollar a piece. Pork tenderloin for $5 a piece. I was pretty happy. Freezer is full of protein for the next couple of months.

No oly, they're typically not, they're typically more. Kroger has been selling packs of chicken for $5. Been drumsticks, but I saw the wings and jumped on it. I have been paying $20 for 14 wings (intact-with drumstick, lower wing, and tips), and this was $20 for 22 wings. So 8 free wings.

At $18 each, they wash well and are super comfortable. I shop online for a very large selection.

Thanks, Rob. I’ve been thinking of fixing teriyaki wings for a party but haven’t shopped yet. I didn’t find any at TJ’s or my food coop. We like chicken thighs. Our Jewel often has them (or drumsticks) for 99 cents a pound. Chicken breasts have been enormous -- and tough. I bought four Prime boneless NY steaks at Costco yesterday for $12.95/lb. The last batch from there were as good meat as we've had in a quite a while -- beautifully marbled and tender.
