Not sure what is going on here...

but my dahlias are about to bloom. I always thought that dahlias, like 'mums' were short day plants, so wouldn't bloom until darkness hours were more than daylight hours - although they can get by with 10 hours of darkness) to bloom a month before the autumn equinox. I can't get my head around this...and am wondering if I ought to disbud or do a 'Chelsea' on them?

These are potted dahlias - the in-ground ones at the allotment won't be seen for ages yet - the first few weeks is desperate survival...but if the plantlets can manage to get to 5-6 inches, the growth momentum overtakes mollusc mauling.
