Please need desperate help with SWC tomatoes....pictures included
Comments (51)Sorry to hear about your BER problem. That's alot of rot on one tomato. I have a bunch of tomato plants this year and they all have set fruit. I do have one plant that is getting BER. As soon as I notice it, I get rid of the tomato.......don't want to waste any plant energy on bad tomatoes. As soon as I see a little spot of BER I yank it. So far on my one bad plant, every tomato has had a BER problem. Funny, I can't figure out why, and I haven't had a BER problem in the past. I added 'a little' lime and some gypsum to the soil, and I'm not going to water it until it really needs it, and let's see what happens. I do have one plant in a two 5 gal bucket SWC, and that plant is doing really well. It's really big, with dark green super leaves, and has a few tomatoes on it. The reservoir probably holds about a gallon, and it needs filling every couple of days due to the plants size, and all the hot dry weather we have been having lately....See MoreOh no, I feel a rampage coming on...
Comments (20)i completely sympathize w/ all of you. august is the one month that i am really NOT proud of our gardens. there is a famous garden designer/gardener in Vancouver, Pam Frost, who will not let anyone visit her garden in August. 'blousy' is her term for it, but then Pam's english, and the english are so lovely with their euphamisms.i think the use of 'scruffy' in one of the above posts- is far more appropriate. I myself call it 'the jungle', when the plants on our narrow paths really take the term 'touchy feely' to new heights. whacking and pruning are great for purging and purifying. as we are in our houses, when the chaos gets out of control, we can get quite uncomfortable. So Ms. Snippy if on the prowl, feeling better every hour.... best, mindy...See Moreeeeeeeerrrrrrrrr!!!!! DEER!!!!
Comments (33)When we moved to the mountains of southcentral PA (bordering Michaux) I swore we wouldn't feed the deer. Until they decimated all of the hostas and whatever else the previous owners had planted. We bought an automatic corn feeder and as long as my husband doesn't let it go empty I've relatively little damage. But!!!! All it takes is one night, just one night of no corn in the feeder for the deer to nearly clean me out. But it has shown me what they will stay away from...herbs. So I've been planting herbs around the plants they prefer. Most of the time, not always, they will only eat the part of the plant(s) farthest away from the herb so I've not been totally decimated of hostas just mostly. I've also tried another spray (1c milk, 1 egg, 1T veg oil, 1T dish detergent to 1 gallon of water) that has also helped as long as I spray it on new growth and flowers. Regarding the milorganite, I didn't have to do much research on that stuff to not want to even handle it or want it near any water supply. And since I have a dog that likes to eat natural fertilizers I don't want that risk of him getting sick. My last resort will be the fence, but two acres is alot of fencing. I've always wondered do people who have to deal with deer ever get used to them? This is only my third year. Karen...See MoreKitchen In Action Thread--for Julia's 100th Birthday!
Comments (78)Eventually we might do just that willtv, but our entire lawn needs a lot of work ("fill" and grading and more grass vs. weeds....). No point in digging up a new section of lawn to "build" a garden until all that is addressed. I have pics of one of my KIA end of summer, tomato sauce-making marathons somewhere (prob on our old desktop computer). Your pics remind me of those. The first or second year without a garden, I broke down and purchased a big bag of luscious, ripe, farm-grown tomatoes at our local farmers market so I could make garden tomato sauce to freeze. KA-CHING!!! Made one batch of the most expensive tomato sauce ever! kellienoelle--what a wonderful looking wine and conversation set-up you put together! I'll bet your friends enjoyed themselves in your beautiful new space!...See MoreRelated Professionals
