New Fencing and Stain Options

Hello- Storms took down our fence so we are in the process of replacing it with a 6’ cedar privacy fence. Seeking perspectives on color and upkeep.

The contractor uses an oil based product, Wood Defender. Colors we are looking at are Oxford Brown, Cedar Tone, and Natural Glow; I’ve labeled each color on jobs they’ve completed.

I’ve also included views of our house. The fence extends to the left and right sides, although you can only see the left side from the street. The deck will be replaced next summer so not concerned about a match. Front door is currently painted orange but we will likely change this down the road.

Any thoughts on color as you see our yard and house? I’ll also gladly accept any advice if you have experience with this product and the upkeep.

Is that western red cedar? People don't stain fences often here in Oregon where cedar is harvested. The gray doesn't seem to bother Oregonians.

We've tried many products over the twenty years we've had our deck. Decking weathers faster than fences, but Natural was gone after one winter. It's basically an oil protectant. Cedar was too orange for my taste. Four years ago we tried Cabot Heartwood. We've been really pleased with Cabot and particularly Heartwood. It's dark but not orange and we get two years from the stain.

In the photo, the fence is newly-installed (unstained) and the deck is freshly stained with Heartwood.

In your case, I'd probably do Natural or Brown. If you are keeping a portion of the old fence, stain it all brown.

Of the colors that you posted, I would choose the oxford brown. I dont like the natural with your house color, and the other ones are way to reddish. The brown is a nice color.

I'm just guessing, but this might be what's happening: Your neighbor's watering is causing the fence to get wet all the way through the boards. The minerals in the water are being deposited on his side (the white stains) and the wetness is causing oxidation (the darkness) on your side. If you're using a clear based stain, the darkness more than likely will still be visible after you've applied the stain, though it might not be any more apparent than it is now. Is there a hidden area where you can test the stain on a board or two? Mill glaze is on everything that gets milled or planed. The only thing that you don't need to sand is the cedar that is rough sewn.

Stain/sealer for new cedar fence.

As the title implies I'm looking for suggestions on a sealer, or stain for a new cedar fence. I personally want a clear sealer that will keep it from greying, but it seems like that doesn't exist. I know I don't want an orange fence, or a dark brown fence. The colors of our house work well with the natural (wet) look. Therefore a clear, of as light as possible stain are what I want. If I need to reapply every 2-3 years that's fine, but I don't want to have to strip the entire fence every couple years to restain it. I have a lot of $$ into the fence, and want to keep it looking good for as long as possible. Is there any clear, or VERY light stain that will last without greying out? Thanks In Advance

Hi, I used Cabot's SPF-48 Sunray on an Ipe deck about 6 years ago and it peeled badly. It is a water based product that does not sink into wood. Having said that, it held up well on the vertical surfaces, so it would probably do well on a fence. If there are any horizontal surfaces, e.g. tops of fence panels, and you live in a cold zone with freeze/thaw cycles, it is likely to peel off in those areas. In that case the Australian Timber Oil would be a better bet, although you would likely have to reapply sooner than with the SPF. Cabot's recommends cleaning wood prior to staining. Their cleaner is bleach based. You might prefer a sodium percarbonate based cleaner instead. This site: http://www.woodrich-brand.com/ has a good video on how to clean and stain a fence as well as their own sodium percarbonate based cleaner. I can't speak to waiting to apply stain on PT lumber, but most experts here say don't wait. You could ask Cabot what they recommend. Good luck, Marty

Eileen- Yep, the contractor uses western red cedar and will replace the entire fence. Leaving the wood untreated could definitely be an option for us. We hear the wood holds up just fine without a stain.

Your backyard looks like a very peaceful place and that deck stain is fabulous! It was very helpful to see the fence’s before and after to see how it’s aging naturally.

Cat_ky- Thanks so much for your input! I agree with avoiding overly reddish tones. Those keep ending up on the bottom of the list.

The gray disappears more than the brown.

Make sure you keep mulch and dirt away from the boards because that will eat away the wood.
