Foyer help in open concept home?

Hi all,

we are just today having our floors replaced (30 year old cracked ceramic tile) and now I am thinking of a different hallway table. I would like a table with drawers in it.

Here is the current table/view. Ignore the floors. I have a black Pottery Barn bench also that serves as shoe storage that I am open to replacing. Also, the small rug in this picture has been replaced with a

runner.

I lean toward natural/mid century type furniture. The adjacent room is our living room.

A floor plan will really help. It will let us see what lights you can see from where. Is your faucet and your hardware both chrome? and your door handles the dark finish. I can't tell if it is antique brass or not? What is your DR chandy - is it brass? You need to figure out, if you are following the article that you posted what category each of the above elements fall into. (the faucet, hardware, etc.) My feeling is that you have already mixed your metals. For example - in the kitchen you have chrome hardware/faucet (step 1). Step 2 would indicate picking a matching metal which you did with the island light and either of the window lights. (I prefer A2 as it adds another element - the white glass shade - into the mix while retaining the metal. Where I am bogging down is in the transition areas between the rooms which is why a floorplan would be helpful. For the foyer/LR I would pick H2 and J1 but that is subject to change depending on the floorplan and how the rooms are connected. Edited to add: Don't forget, unlike a bathroom, a kitchen comes with other metals. What are your appliances, pots/pans, cutlery. What are your plans for your stools - any metal there? In your foyer, LR and GR - does any of the furniture have any metal in them and if so - what type. Are any of your accessories metal. How about your backsplash. This thought and question was triggered while I was just in my kitchen and happened to notice my copper backsplash which is behind and underneath my stainless steel range and vent. My hardware and faucets are brushed nickel while my lights in the eating area and family room are aged bronze. My pendants are a mix of the two and act as a transition. I treated each `area of the house as a separate area. Kitchen/eating area/family room is one area while the DR and LR was treated as a separate area. Because the Kitchen/eating area/family room had a mix of metals I felt comfortable using either of those 2 metals in other rooms. The copper backsplash was my jumping off point for using copper in a variety of accessories throughout the house.. So, 3 metals throughout the house. Exactly. I agree . In my prior comment, the walls are actually pretty square. We measured it in front of him and he also measured. This should not result in a difference of inches on the other side of the room. In my last comment about the rows, I did not measure from wall. I measured from his first row to his last. Which like I sd, we all agreed the walls were fairly even and square. So it’s hard for me to understand how a fairly straight room became off by inches and why there are no expansion gaps on one side of the room to a 3/4in gap. Anyways, he finally admitted to not measuring anything when we asked to see and hear his process/explanation for laying down the floors. All he did was decided to start at the left corner of patio door and that was it. Why he choose the shortest wall in my house to start with patio doors and a fireplace in the center?? Idk. He didn’t have explanation. He blamed my walls for not being squared but how did he know if he never measured? He only measured when my husband and I did it in front of him. He did nothing to ensure his line was straight. No chalk line, no markings, laser, nothing. He said, he’s never had to measure his first row to make sure it’s straight. He also said open concept homes can’t have wood floors that align and flow into other rooms. That you’d have to make rip cuts and lay down transition strips between spaces. I’m sorry, I’m not an expert but I know that statement is untrue. You can flow flooring into other rooms regardless if it’s open space or not. Well an update is we let him go. Our issue still stands. The floors as they enter the other rooms do not match up. At this point, it looks like ripping up the floors the only option. This time, will start in our hallway since that’s our longest wall and it connects all the rooms. Will use splines to switch directions and should there be cuts, it’ll be by the walls and not dead smack in the middle of my floors like it would be now.

Wait until everything is in and complete before worrying about paint. Manchester Tan (if it's the swatch I think it is) looks a little blah to me. The swatches are so far away in your pictures, it's honestly hard to tell. ETA: I see you added the top picture, thank you for the close-up. If your kitchen gets tons of light at all different times of the day, I think you could go a little bolder with your selections. I'm not a fan of gray in your space, but maybe a deeper blue or green could work.

Take what follows as worth what you paid for it. (Ha...) My very first starter home was a tiny cape cod, where the front door dropped everyone on the far end of the living room. Words fail to describe how much I hated that. I spent years trying to create a nice first impression, a nice foyer, out of that stupid entry. I loved most of that house, it was a great first house - but I never solved the problem of not having a nice front entry. It sounds like you care about something similar too. Some people care, some people don't - that's the beauty of life, different things matter to different people. If you're building a brand new home, and are lucky enough to be building it at the beach, then you really should take advantage of this to know what you want, and to get what you want. Within reason, of course. :-) But a nice foyer is certainly a very reasonable ask. Not seeing the entire floor plan and things to scale, I have no idea if a pretty table will work for you to delineate some space. Just bear in mind whoever said upthread that will need a lot of room to work is 100% right, and honestly it would not work for me. However I am not you. I am just imploring you to think carefully about what matters and what doesn't - lest you spend a shocking amount of money on a new build and then end up like me, spending years hating one of the most important parts of the house.

Decide what size and color your want to contrast all that wood in your home. Some websites allow you to try on tile on your photos.

Beverly, the original post stated that a new floor is being installed today. The OP has not updated us about the new hallway floor choice.

Hi, the tile is already selected and being installed as we speak (or type lol). I will post a pic soon. I need console ideas/colors as well as possibly a bench. Thanks!

Shouldn't the table be to the right of the closet? It seems odd next to a bathroom door and looks in the way.

Because of the narrowness of the entry, I'd select a wall-mounted entry shelf more narrow than what you had before which was too wide for the wall.

If you require a bench I would have placed one beneath the drawer/shelf and added art over the shelf. I'd also would have painted your doors charcoal gray.

Your new floors are nice!

Looking at your last couple of pics, I think it looks nice with no furniture at all. More spacious, less cluttered. I’d just have runners and art on the walls (a large piece where the table was).

Another option I was considering is placing a table next to the stairs and bench closer to the closet, where the black table was in my original picture. I have this table from another room that I like a lot that fits in the space…

Different wood but isn’t that different in person

It don’t think it suits, both style and location wise.

I could see a smaller/narrower/lighter console (where your table is located). How it‘s accessorized will make a big difference as well.

Unless you need a bench (if you do, complement the console) but either way, I’d configure closet so shoes can be stored away.

Mock up a cardboard or paper comply of the mirror’s length and width and tape it on your wall next to the lamps. What is the rest of your furniture in your living room, etc. look like? The mirror seems more traditional in style than the lamps you have chosen to try out.
