some pictures i took today
Comments (37)Ronald: Yes, I have two seedling abiu trees. One has fruited one time, but I never got to tatse the fruit as we went away on vacation just before they were ready to be picked and they were gone when we returned. Here are some pictures I posted previously in another thread on this forum. Unforunately this bloom pictured, was only on one of the trees, and no fruit set. Actually, this particular tree has bloomed several times over the past few years (and multiple times per year) and has never set a fruit. I may have to take the chain saw out and let it rest by the trunk of the tree for a few days to see if that gets any rise out of the darn thing. There is a wide range of quality of fruit on Abiu, just like in Star Apple. How did your's compare?...See MoreTook some pictures this morning
Comments (24)Dave, the chorus line has left the building and is en route! Holy moly but that is an awe-inspiring sight! I keep looking at the pictures and my brain freezes...but my eyes just can't drink in enough. Anyone starting to get into hostas and looking at these photos would be thunderstruck. To maintain around 500 hostas (potted) is one thing - but to have them all looking like divas is quite the testament to your love and dedication of hosta. 1st picture:. Who is the top-left-of-center one with wide yellow center? 2nd:. Blue cupped one? 3rd is a gorgeous ripple brigade! 5th&6th Love the forefront two together (?) Amalia is a standout. Incredible, Dave. Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed my coffee that much more very early this morning with this post. I hope you have a wonderful day today....See MoreI finally took some pics! Enjoy
Comments (12)Very nice gardengoon! I am looking forward to getting my Morning Star in the ground as well as Azure Frills. Good incentive! I am a huge fan of Gas plant and only get the lemon scent and no reaction to handling it but I know some people do. My pink just started to bloom and the white has not started yet at all. Thank you for sharing!...See MoreA landscaper pulled some blooming azaleas. I took them. Now what?
Comments (18)What we have in this situation is a "landscaper" who yanked established azaleas out of the ground with little to no attention to getting a decent-sized root ball. These plants are essentially in shock which will only be prolonged by expecting those few roots to support abundant top growth (which will likely die back to a considerable degree). Ideally, top growth should have been trimmed back well before transplanting, as indicated in this article. "Cutting back existing azaleas to 6 inches tall before you dig them in winter forces them to develop healthy roots before they divert energy to the foliage and stems." http://gardenguides.com/12226532-when-to-transplant-azaleas.html From another sources on establishing woody plants: "New plants will benefit from being pruned back by about one third immediately after planting. This will help reduce the amount of top growth that needs to be supplied with water in the first year and make the plant more stable while its roots establish." http://gardenersworld.com/plants/six-ways-to-help-trees-and-shrubs-establish-quickly/ That last point is worth emphasizing. Top-heavy shrubs with scant root balls are far more susceptible to being uprooted, by wind and animals....See MoreRelated Professionals
