Don't forget to be careful.....
Comments (11)If anyone has ever had an eye exam the drops they put into your eyes contain the tropane alkaloid Scopolamine. Scopolamine is one of the alkaloids contained in many of the Solanaceous plants including Brugmansia. The dilation of the pupil is not dangerous as long as you protect your eyes from bright light until the pupil is able to constrict again. Scopolamine is also used extensivly to treat motion sickness and is often applied using a dermal patch. Brugmansias are no doubt toxic but unless you have an allergy or you ingest part of your plant you will be fine. Remember these plants have been used in a ritual atmosphere in several South American countries for hundreds of years where they ingest a concoction of the flowers or leaves accompanied with other alkaloid rich plants. Of course this is a very serious undertaking and could be life threatening but I think it is important that the general public knows that these plants are not as dangerous as everyone says they are if you treat them with respect, just don't eat them and you will be fine. Children because of their size are obviously more sensitive so it is always a good idea to keep an eye on them and teach them not to put anything in their mouth unless it came from mom or dad or the refrigerator. Here is a link that might be useful: Scopolamine eye drops...See MoreDon't buy Anderson, Stay away from Pella, forget Marvin!
Comments (16)I am a commercial contractor in Florida. My last home had Pella Architect series throughout. 10 years and 8 months in the home, and we discovered the bottom rails in approximately 75% of the windows had rotted. Our house had casement and French doors throughout. We had two French Doors that the bottom of each had rotted. The only way we found out that our windows and doors had failed was the magnets for our alarm system fell out. The alarm monitor said “zone faulted” When I called the Pella representative in Orlando, I was told that had we called a year earlier, they would have warranted the windows. The frustrating thing was since we live in Florida, it's typically to hot to open the windows so we would never have known if not for our security system. After some investigation into the windows, it became known that Pella knew this issue was a problem for quite a few years. According to one of their installers, they had been testing windows for 6-8 years in south Florida because of the numerous failures. Soon I will be purchasing approximately $150,000.00 worth of windows. I am leaning toward PGT casement windows. I think vinyl and aluminum both have their advantages....See MoreThe solar eclipse is coming!
Comments (28)A grocery clerk this evening told me that his friend is planning to buy several cases of water, put them on ice and deliver them to people stuck in their cars on the roads. He would accept donations, but no obligation-I thought that was a super idea. We're expecting over half a million people in our town. My office will pretty much be empty-I don't know who will be there, but I know I'm not going to be! We're mandated by law to be open, so it may just be the Director answering the phone, LoL....See MoreWho lives in the path of the eclipse?
Comments (150)In Sparta, we drove to a convenience store parking lot to use the restroom. It was a little bit after noon, well over an hour before peak eclipse time when we got ready to drive around to find our viewing location. Robert just happened to look up with his eclipse glasses before we got into the vehicle and said, "It's already started!" Sure enough, a little bite was missing from the sun! Even that was exciting. The difference between any smaller percentage and a full eclipse is very significant. You wouldn't think so, but it is. Even at the last minute.....99%.....there is still sunlight providing light, if even a little bit. as the moon moved into that perfect position everything changed. It was shocking, startling, gasp provoking. Can't explain it, really. I shouted to everyone to remove their eclipse glasses; it was an amazing thing to see. The corona around black hole was like a dim night light, providing some illumination to the night sky but not to the ground. Can't really explain it. Everyone was quiet, speaking only in whispers to those closest. It was an intimate moment for this small group we were with, thankfully not a mob nor with an idiot who felt compelled to shoot off fireworks. ;-( But that second when the moon moved into that perfect spot, lots of noisy spontaneous reactions. Funny about the bug spray. The guy who came with his little Yorkie (Rocky, a rescue) went around offering spritzes of his organic repellent after the little nuisances came out in hoards; they were ravenous! It duskish at that time and we needed protection! By the way, Huntsville was in the 97% range, enough to enjoy an interesting experience. We chose to "go big" and drive that picturesque two hours to Sparta. Robert took a couple of quick videos and they are both filled with the sounds of the crickets and cicadas. The difference between a couple of minutes before the total eclipse and the big moment was striking. Day and night. I can't quite explain it....See MoreRelated Professionals
