A subject near & dear to my heart as our time goes by!!
Our beloved Samoyed, Callie, is now a little over 14.5 years old!! I hope we can still have her past her 15th Birthday, which is mid-Sept. It's the day before my B-day!
Like a lot of dogs, she started having rear-legs/hip issues last Fall. We've had her on a good Joint-supplement for many years too, starting when she was about 7 (people years) old. X-rays showed the typical disc-degeneration, etc. last September. Stairs were getting to be a problem, so we couldn't just let her zoom up & down the smooth wooden deck steps anymore to go potty.
So-
We decided to do the Doggie Chiropractic & Acupuncture, with the Vet's Laser treatment at the end of the electrical stimulation period. It really helped her a lot! After a month-6 weeks tho', it's obvious the benefits wear off.....and we knew this going in. She's also been on Canine Rimadyl 2x/day since Fall also.

We decided to try this relatively new (in U.S. anyway) "Vaccine" 3 weeks ago. This coming Tuesday, it'll be 3 weeks. The Vet says it usually takes a month to start showing visible results....which is time for the 2nd shot. Another Vet friend of mine was describing how this stuff works, & it seems quite fascinating! I think we're starting to see slight improvement in Callie's movement & stair-climbing now!!!!!!
We realize that it's not gonna make her live longer. Although I would give damn near anything to have that happen!!!! It's the "Quality of Life" issue obviously.

Comments (6)Pipdog, I have over a dozen of these as hedges and two as trees. They grow fast in our climate if given water, and they recover well from butchering. I'm sorry the ends of the branches got cut off, that's going to cause the ends of the branches to sprout out many shoots, which can make the ends of the branches too heavy. Here's what I would do, in addition to giving it water. When you see the new growth at the tips of the branches and all along the length of the branches, make sure that growth is somewhat balanced. If you can get on a ladder and pinch off or rub off unwanted fuzz/sprouts to allow the tree to send energy into chosen sprouts that would be ideal. You can consider this an opportunity to remake the tree into a shape you like. If necessary, you can get an arborist out in the spring to choose which baby branchlets to save and which to trim off. They may charge the minimum, since there will be no real waste to dispose of. It is best to do this in the spring, since our summers are too hot for pruning most trees. Comments (14)Well, my favorite idea - cooking for them and then making a basket with booze & such got shot down fast. "I'm not going to cook for a CHEF!" said one of the participants. Oh well, we're back to square one. If you have any more ideas, please let me know. I'm guessing we're going to end up with gift cards simply because we won't be able to come to an agreement on anything else. Sweeby, We go to Damian's. We have seven attending and that's about the limit the table can accomodate. But I'm sure as little as two would be ok in there. However, if you're going to do it, get some friends to go with you. It takes up the entire evening and it's more fun with more people. IIRC the price is $75 + tax & tip. It might be slightly higher than that but I'm sure it's under $100. That does not include liquor of course. We end up spending somewhere around $130ish per person, that includes cocktails and wine. Although it's not a complete list, b4-u-eat.com has some chef tables listed, and you can google for more places that have them. I do highly recommend Damian's though. The food is fab. Comments (49)Jan, please try to banish the guilt even though it is natural. In fact about a month before we lost Phoenix, one of her colorado vets who had herself just lost a pet, warned us that guilt was natural, but don't go there. Notwithstanding that advice, felt guilty too, but when I really looked at it, it was guilt caused by the fact that I couldn't make Phoenix better. We tried everything we could think of, acupuncture and cold lazer therapy (which worked well early on) rugs over every wood or tile surface she could slip on ramps made to go up the steps from the bedrooms to the den and down the back porch steps, and a great harness that last month that we could use to comfortably use to pick her up and get her on her feet. To be honest, rationally I know that we probably should have done it earlier, but we thought we could keep her comfortable and there were some things (especially treats) that made her happy. I really think that last day, she told us it was time, because my husband and I reached the decision separately and when we called our housekeeper (a/k/a the dogs' Aunt Mary) she told us that she knew it was time the afternoon before and urged us to go ahead and do it that day. The vet could do it late that afternoon, so Mary came over and gave her some treats and a lot of love, then I left work early to spurn some time with her and pretty some DH came home. Phoenix was already in heaven with all her people around her feeding her her favorite food, but she still had a body that was worn out. At the appointed time we get in to the car. To make the trip to the vetss we got in the car (Phoenix loved to ride in the car especially when I was feeding her ham and cheese the whole way. She even got a lots of compliments on how pretty she was at the vests and she liked that too. So she did have a great final trip we even took her bed so she could be comfortable. The vet explained the process, that she would first get a shot that would just put her into a deep comfortable sleep and then he would come back to administer the fatal shot. It was the first shot that did it for me. She continued eating ham and cheese as her eyes grew heavier and heavier until she was in a deep and comfortable sleep. It was then when I looked at her sleeping so much more comfortably than she had in months, with all the tension in her muscles melted away, I knew we were doing the right thing. Comments (69)Lily, in 2015, he developed hyper-thyroid. He was losing weight, yet ate all the time, and also drank more water. I suspected the thyroid or diabetes. He was on medication and strict blood-work monitoring to check his T levels. Did you know that cats hoarking fur-balls isn't normal? I thought it was. That can be attributed to IBD (irritable bowel disease). He got that as well. Prednisone helped with that. I also gave him slippery elm bark that I mixed into a syrup which soothes their intestines. A lot of animals use this to help with digestive issues. The past few weeks, he drank too much water and peed it all out. Nothing I gave him, he had any desire to eat. He'd eat just morsels of food. I was giving him food several times/day and it was very inconvenient, but just to get him to eat enough. Everything from raw, $3 tins of cat food to kitty-crack (Fancy Feast). I didn't care what he ate, as long as he ate something. Often he'd turn his nose up at it, and I had several opened tins of food in the frig. last monthCallie is a beauty. I hope she stays well for a lot longer. We have lived with Australian Shepherds for about 25 years. Our current Aussies are 5 & 6. As a breed, they can live into their teens although we lost our 2nd girl to a seizure disorder at age 6. Dogs give us a special kind of love, don't they? Here's a picture to make you smile. This is Xander, our younger guy. He climbed up the bulkhead to look in the window to let us know he wanted back inside with us.
