Casement vs Sliding Windows

I am trying to decide if I should go with casement windows or sliding windows. Casement is more expensive, but the window guy keeps telling me that the sliders will look better because there will be 6 inches of vinyl in between the glass panels on the casement windows, whereas the sliders will be much thinner and more glass, since there is a view, I am taking that into consideration. But I think the casement windows are still a better option? Also, since we are close to the beach, he said that the casement windows will be more maintenance. Should I just go with the sliders?here is a photo. We are replacing the entire window along with the blocks above it. It will be one big window. And there are two of them on that wall.

With larger windows the space between the casements becomes less of an issue. casements are typically more air tight, the screens are on the inside and tend to have more issues.

Also we are replacing the French door and that window with one big sliding door. And we are also doing them all in black color.

We had a similar decision to make except that the casements were to open into a screened porch and we were concerned that while on the porch, people might run into them. We have double hung windows with grills on the top half all throughtout our home but I didn't want my sink centered on a middle piece of wood between two casements. Was just something I didn't personally like for our kitchen. We then saw a similar window to what is in my most recent post which has sliders where the side casements usually are and a large picture window in the middle. WE LOVE IT because it gives us unobstructed view, still has the venting options, screens are on the outside and we felt that having the option of the grills on the side windows, helped it to look more traditional like the rest of the windows in our home....our window is one of the best choices we made - we just love it! The Ultrex material on the Integrity windows and doors is very strong and can be painted any color you want. It comes in Pebble Grey and Stone White. It is a great insulator as well. The production time is much quicker because there are fewer size choices and options. I would put Integrity in my home if I didn't want to pay the price for the Marvin clad product. They will soon be coming out with an all Ultrex double hung window, and later they will add casements and gliders.

I prefer casements to sliders. Sliders as a type of window have higher air infiltration than any other type. Casements have the lowest. Cleaning casements is easy as most offset 90 degrees when fully opened. Sliders require you lift the entire sash out of the track and set it on the floor unless you purchase a swing slider. If you go with vinyl, make sure you go with a quality vinyl window. The cheaper ones will fall apart in a short period of time. I would look at Sunrise, Okna and Softlite if you are looking for high quality vinyl window.

Yes, having the screen inside made me pause, however, I did end up with the crank out. The screen rolls up and during the summer months, I pull it down. In the winter, I just leave it up. Love the clean look and being able to open even while raining. The crank out took up more glass space which I did not want to give up. This is a Marvin Ultimate Awning Window which replaced an old double hung over the sink.

If you are in a hurricane zone I’d prefer a casement. In my opinion they seal much better than sliders.

What brand and line of windows? Many brands the slider is the low end of their product offerings.

Some good feedback above.

Casements: Best seal, higher end look (subjectively speaking), more service issues (they sag), higher cost.

Sliders: More glass, less money, they don't seal as well and can have some install related issues when the outer edge of the sill isn't fully supported.

Based on being in a pretty mild climate, I'd say that sliders would be a fine option for you.

That is not right. I think the comment above to "more issues" was referring to the screens having more issues not the casements themselves.

Tell us more about your "window guy", specifically what brand of windows is he talking about? All this discussion of casements vs sliders is not that meaningful if we are talking about a low-end brand vs a high-quality brand.

I've actually never had a windows contractor recommend sliders instead of casements. The sliders have so much air infiltration compared to casements. But as HomeSealed mentioned, perhaps in a mild climate it does not matter as much. In my climate it matters a great deal.
