Gazebo? Pergola?

Looking for the best option for shade on our patio. patio is about 15x15’ and full West sun. i like pergokas but concerned there wont be enough shade. Gazebo is another choice but im concerned about putiing it right off the patio door. will the rain come fiwn right n front if the payio? Is it strange to put a gazebo right off the door? Looking for advice and ideas.

Context is key. Post up pics of the area in question and an idea of the type of pergola or gazebo you are thinking of.

There are retractable awnings as well.

Thanks for the input, it does help. To address a few things- I'm considering a deck, my neighbor has the identical house (small 1950s ranch) and put a deck but his has a railing. I may not do a railing, instead wrap around stairs as its low enough local code won't require it. I plan to do a patio area in front of where the basement windows are and around the shed area. If I do this I'll have to do the pergola later. As for sun- the house faces south west, so this side faces north east ish. The sun in the afternoon isn't that bad, it's mainly to create a visual break between the townhouse windows and my own house's windows and back yard. It doesn't have to be a compound with real high walls and complete isolation. Now that I think about it, a solid pavilion will block out light from the house windows, so that further leans me towards a pergola. Bugs may be an issue as I had these dang biting insects in the past but I may have eradicated them by cutting down my overgrown bushes. My neighbors about 100 feet away have both a rear deck and a front porch and they regularly sit outside with no problem. Also, I am an avid DIYer, so building something like a pergola is not out of the question. I just used the "off the shelf" examples but nothing is off the table now.

Lily- Congrats! It's a beautiful house and land...and I'm so happy for you. Is that you sitting on the chair with the view? As for the yard, the good thing about patchy grass is that it will be easier to remove and replace with gardens! LOL Is the top soil very good? Sometimes a builder will just spread dirt over the area, without topsoil...and nothing wants to grow. That (hopefully) free manure could really come in handy. Definitely take your time planning! Do you still have the dogs? Where do you plan to have their area? Everywhere or only out back? That makes a difference on your design, too. I love the idea of a pergola...and a pond! Depending on the light and wind patterns, I would probably put the roses in the front and add some perennials and shrubs to give it a bit of a cottage feel...but a little more formal. That's where the grass paths can really help and give you a place to walk through the gardens and have a few benches to sit down and enjoy the fragrances! I would also put climbing roses on the pergola...you'll have a mild enough winter (normally) that they should do very well! I'm so excited for you! You have to give us updates and a lot more pictures :)

Susan asked many comments ago what roses I am drooling over. I had a gazebo installed yesterday and have been busy prepping the site and putting the cornerstones and center stone. WoW! Are Amish Country Gazebos amazing. The crew came at 8:30 in the morning and installed my 12' gazebo in 4 hours, they were on the road out of here at 12:30. I'm absolutely in love with the gazebo, so very well made! If anyone in the uS is in the market for a gazebo, pergola or pavilion, summerhouse or poolhouse I can highly recommend this company. I'm in California, so far from the manufacture in Pennsylvania but they delivered for free! Anyway back to roses...Some of the ones I see that I would love to have: Noisette Moschata, Papillon the tea, Bernard, Comte de Torres (Angel Gardens has one that looks much different than Ducher's, but they only show a bud so it is hard to judge), Comtesse Cecile de Chabrillant, and now my computer is centering everything for some bizarre reason so I will stop there. Anything pinkish floppy button-eyed, and tissue paper like :)

Thank you, you’re very kind. We like the pavers and occassionally have needed to adjust a few - primarily due to tree roots. The property began as dirt when we built in ’95/‘96. So, time is your ally with any landscaping. The patio was built in ’98 as a DIY project. Took all summer. My speculation is that your settling is a consequence of backfill not having been compacted before the concrete was poured. That is no longer an issue. So for speed and expense you might want to consider a stamped/stained concrete patio. Speak with a qualified concrete installer. If you have and questions someone here can advise.

We need pics I do not find pergolas a great way to handle the sun unless they are totally covered which then poses issues with interior light. The motorized awnings are great but we need pics. Post here in a comment DO NOT start another post.

I am a gazebo fan; so if possible, that would be my choice.

No, it is not strange at all to have a gazebo near a patio door; actually, can have certain advantages And you can get a gazebo that has drainage.

You solution could be anything from a simple umbrella all the way to a newly build porch. Photos would help greatly.

it would be a shame to limit the patio space with a fixed gazebo.

do you plan to use it just seasonally, or year round? Doesn't appear to be a tropical setting

You call a local awning company, and you get a custom retractable with a hard wired wind sensor.

There are a zillion fabrics, and know you will need a bit of exterior "house surgery/beefing of infrastructure' in the wall.

But.......that will be your best bet here for what you have.

General idea...ignore fabric, and you can have a tailored valance as well

Beautiful house and outdoor space. A gazebo would be very nice there. Much more elegant than a retractable awning hanging off your house, imo. Don‘t get me wrong... an awning can work well in some setups. But for your house and property, I think you are right to think gazebo. Would be stunning.

I would just add an umbrella. That way you won't lose light in the winter due to a permanent structure.
